We highly recommend this wonderful place directly inside the jungle with fantastic view to the Pacific Ocean. We had such a great time at the lodge of Tom, where we felt very comfortable.
Tom gave us a lot of great tips where to go and showed us his personal jungle which was fabulous ! Be careful, because you will not leave this place, because it’s so nice.
For additional information, we had perfect internet access and a parking place directly in front of the house. Really everything we needed was available. Thank you so much for everything you showed and gave us ! We promise to come back …

I stayed at the lodge for two nights and I enjoyed it very much. The lodge cabins are spacious and have outdoor kitchens. The view from the terrace in front of the big cabin is really amazing and if you are lucky you will be visited by a monkey.
Tom showed me around the forest and the village and it was the best beginning to my travels in Costa Rica. I will definitely be back.

In Review: Casa Caballo Lodge in Alto del Monte, Costa Rica

Any nature lover will enjoy Tom’s lodge and the trails below. You have allot of privacy compared to hotels and can do what your heart desires. Don’t expect a 5 star service with staff all over the place. But Tom provides always helpful advise and has many times some fun stories to share. Mornings are perfect with freshly brewed coffee sitting out on the deck soaking in the sounds of the animal world.
Playful clouds above the ocean are shaping the sun rays for spectacular views.
Restaurants and grocery stores are nearby and if you are looking for more entertainment you can explore the surrounding towns. Local food is awesome and always freshly prepared. Don’t expect any fast food joints around.
If you are in for a relaxing and slightly adventurous trip, go for it. You will never forget it.

A rental car is recommended to explore the beauty of the country. Road conditions are excellent, but be aware of mountain road conditions with steep inclines and some dirt roads to reach you destination.

A friend recommended to visit Casa Caballo Lodge and host Tom while travelling through Costa Rica. And boy, are we happy that we followed the recommendation! Though we could only stay one night we really enjoyed the whole experience enchilada: spider monkey visit with very stubborn requests for more bananas, the most beautiful sunset, the wonderful fish ceviche in Dennis' Linda Vista walk-to restaurant (10 minutes if even) with a nice glass (or two) of wine. Unfortunately the flight back home was already booked and paid, otherwise we would definitely have stayed much longer. We didn't have time to experience the nature trails through the jungle and coffee farm, so we have to come back and it will be soon! Pura Vida!

The casa caballo lodge is a very nice and roomy accommodation. The house we stayed in had 2 bedrooms and a large living area with a well equipped kitchen. The best part though is the Terrace. The moment you step out of the living room you are in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle.
The host, Tom was very friendly and did everything to make us feel at home. I would definitely recommend the lodge to anyone visiting Costa Rica and who would like to stray from the well trodden tourist paths.

I love the tranquil beauty of Casa Caballo. I enjoyed a warm welcome from Tom who is a wonderful host. He has much knowledge of well kept secrets in the mountains and forests of Atenas that he is happy to share. His coffee is the freshest and best in all of the Central Valley. This is a well located hide out for residents, visitors or anyone seeking a rich experience in Costa Rican style. There are great facilities and space for large families, business groups or any reunion or meeting. I am definitely going back to Casa Caballo!

We stayed several times at Tom's Casa Caballo Lodge, and enjoyed it every time. Up in the mountains of Atenas with fantastic views over the valley all the way down to the Pacific Ocean. In the morning you will wake up with lots of birds, including Tucans as well as monkeys. The temperature during the day is perfect. At night it will cool of perfect for sleeping. When the day comes to an end you can see the fog coming up in the valley. We will be back.

You would need look far and wide for a nicer and more accommodating host, than Tom!

Being Helpful & Understanding of first time visitors is an understatement!
Picking us up at the airport in all of the pandemonium of lots of folks looking for rides, etc., really helped our anxiety about such!

Tom took the time to research and help us book accommodations at other CR locations which was a great help for " newcomers" like us! My wife is also German, so she and Tom would often chit chat in German when it seemed to better get a point across! I can get by, but that is about it!

Tom took us to an expat "gathering" one evening, where an expat band was entertaining with TRUE oldies & goodies, especially for us oldies! They do this periodically as charity work for needy CR entities. This night was for an old folks home! We met a lot of expats from other countries, too! Great fun and interaction, us "picking the brains" of others re living in CR...a definite consideration!

When at Tom's, we so enjoyed just sitting in a rocking chair out on the deck which overlooks a valley, miles away. Just sitting there and enjoying one of CR's excellent beers made life nearly perfect!

We (especially me, who HATES cold weather) are already seriously considering another trip down in the not too distant future. Wife off to Germany on 14 Dec for Christmas with relatives there, while I stay in the sometimes winter warmth of SW New Mexico...remember, I hate the COLD and...having been stationed in Germany a number of times...IT DOES GET COLD!

If you are looking to get the best experience in Costa Rica, I suggest you stay at this one of kind LODGE!
1. Location: Woke up every morning to the most magical view of the mountains. Because of the high elevation, the weather temperature is absolutely perfect (65-75 F)!
2. Wildlife: you can relax on the porch, and easily spot beautiful parrots. Also saw monkeys!
3. You can hike in the backyard which has long trails, with supportive bamboo stairs!
4. Locals: you’ll get to meet many of the neighbors, who treat you like family!
5. Food: there is a restaurant/bar I don’t walking distance! Some nights they even have karaoke. Just 10 minutes down the road you’ll find more restaurants and grocery stores!
6. Unique design: This launch is truly a work of art! It has beautiful wooden rocking chairs & tables. Comfortable beds and couches. Huge kitchen! Even a bathroom which has solar as an option for when you take a shower!
7. Water: you can drink water out of the tap, it’s very clean, and OK even for tourists.
8. There are accessible trails, just five minutes away, that you can hike for hours and see even more wildlife!
9. Staying here was a great decision and one of the best experiences of my life.
10. PURA VIDA!

Our Gym equipment is in the process of being moved to a more suitable location on the property and we still have a fabulous ocean view. Thank you for all your kind comments. Your Casa Caballo Team
