La Casa Sol Otavalo (Andean Lodge)

It may come as a surprise that the town of Otavalo is quite dense and crowded, especially on market days. For us this location is ideal because it's far enough away from the crowds, noise and pollution, yet close enough that we can easily get to town for shopping and meals.

The lodge is really one of a kind. It was designed and built by the owner, and it's clearly a labor of love. We love the complex layouts with windy hallways, hidden courtyards, multiple staircases and all the colors. No two rooms are the same. And it's all set in a tranquil, lush landscape with spectacular views. Needless to say our children spent the whole time running around the property and thankfully the staff were kind enough to tolerate them. Our children also became attached to the resident dog who really seemed to enjoy playing with them. Moreover, this would be an ideal environment for an artist or a writer. The owner is a joy to talk to. He's clearly passionate about art and music (he's also a musician) and his collections are extensive.

The lodge is just minutes away from Peguche waterfalls ($1/adult). As a bonus, just outside the entrance to the waterfalls is smaller market with many clothing vendors; it's nice if you don't want to venture into town.

We didn't have a car in Otavalo. We had the owner take us to and from the airport, and we got around town by taxis. Taxi fares are quite affordable ($2.50 in town, $6 out of town). The road up to the lodge is quite steep and paved with cobblestone (I was told the road would get rebuilt either 2023 or 2024). There's a longer alternative route which takes you down the hill, not up it. That said, taxis have no problem going up the hill. I've driven extensively in Central America and roads here appear at least as good or better. However, if you're not comfortable driving here, consider other options.

This place is out of this world, and the view!! Morning coffee doesn’t get better than this. The staff is helpful and the food is great. Mixed with the beauty of this place and the cozy rooms, this is the perfect place to stay!

This hotel exceeded my expectations! It was so authentic with great architecture and atmosphere. Marcus (the owner) and Isolina were super-friendly. The room was so clean, my wife and I loved the beds, patio, fireplace, and views. The breakfast/dinner area is so authentic too, you feel it's like a museum. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. Also, Cascada de Peguche (waterfall) is only 10 mins away. Thank you Marcus and Isolina for the great experience! I highly recommend this place if you are heading to Otavalo.

Amazing villa, beautifully designed, with gorgeous views of the surrounding areas. Good hospitality and caretakers. Its on the side of a steep hill so make sure your vehicle can handle the grade. But worth the trip.

Beautiful architecture, excellent food, great views, and authentic Andean hosptality. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

Oozing with charm, service, and comfort. I vastly preferred this location than staying by the lake or within the Otavalo center.

Looks like a hobbit-home (if you know your Lord of the Rings). Super-friendly staff. Fireplace in the room. Overlooking Otavalo.

Un lugar muy tranquilo para descansar. Las habitaciones muy acogedoras al igual que el staff que trabaja ahí, gente muy amable y atenta a tus necesidades. La Casa Sol tiene una arquitectura de Casa de Campo muy agradable y de colores que te hacen sentir en casa, tiene una terraza en el restaurant muy bien decorada y con una vista espectacular de Otavalo mientras desayunas o cenas. Ah! la comida deliciosa y bien presentada con productos propios del huerto que tienen.
