If you’d like a true taste of Spain, with knowledgeable and lovely English-speaking hosts (Ángel and Lucy) and excellent food, this is the place! The hiking in the region is spectacular, and Posada San Marcos is a comfortable and charming place to begin and return at the end of the day. The breakfasts are homemade and delicious, and dinners are also available – – also homemade by Lucy from fresh local products transformed into delicious meals. The rooms are comfortable, and open out through French doors to a patio with a lemon and orange tree. A wonderful place to stay!

Wonderful place to stay. So peaceful. Lucy and Ángel are perfect hosts and their cooking is superb. Make sure to book dinner. The walking in the area is excellent with plenty of quiet trails. We will be back 10/10

This Posada is a gem. It is situated in a tiny back street of the picturesque village of Alájar. The Posada is very comfortable with a pretty garden, beautiful swimming pool and views of the mountain above Alájar. Lucy and Angel are wonderful hosts - Angel with his extensive knowledge of the history and flowers in the area. Lucy is a superb cook - we really enjoyed the delicious breakfasts with organic local breads, local olive oils, homemade pates and yogurts organic walnuts and freshly squeezed orange juice. The evening meals are not to be missed. The walks from the Posada are great - a network of cobbled tracks to other small villages. We keep returning to this wonderfully unspoilt area of Spain

What a delightful stay 3 of us had at this gem in Alajar. For 2 weeks solid, we immersed ourselves in the local flora and fauna with daily walks (one day we arranged to walk to Al Monstera, eat at a delightful restaurant that Lucy Y Angel recommended, and then we were picked up and driven home). The Wikilocs hike maps that our hosts set up for guests were indispensable. And after we walked, we swam in the lovely saltwater pool, read our books under the shady arbor, and then (of course) ate Lucy's very tasty cooking. We had the added bonus of being in town during the Fall festival, and felt part of something totally uplifting and celebratory.

What a real gem. Our hosts Lucy and Angel have a passion for their hotel and the area around Alájar. Lucy is a great cook and Angel has amazing knowledge of the area and can take you on walks and gastronomy journeys to experience the local area. They have a deep passion for the environment and everything they do shows they care. Highly recommend

A wonderful, peaceful location. Lucy and Angel are very friendly and helpful hosts. Great food, jamon and olive oils. The walking trails through the woods are sometimes challenging but very rewarding. Several bars and restaurants only 5 minutes away. A great place to stay if you are looking to unwind and relax.

This is our second stay at the Posada San Marcos, among numerous visits to Alajar, and I think we can officially say it's one of our favorites in the area. Comfy rooms facing the hillside make you feel 'out there' and yet only a minute walk to the plaza, making it super easy to get a coffee, drink or meal. Plus, Lucy and Angel are wonderful hosts who clearly love sharing their passion for the region. Definitely recommend!

We have stayed with Lucy and Angel three times now and every time they have done nothing but made us feel most welcome. Whether it be helping us find great walks (of which there are many in the area), or fantastic places to eat (of which there are many) they have always both been really helpful. Don’t always eat out though because Lucy’s food is fabulous. They are both so knowledgeable about the area and Angel’s passion about his country is so infectious. I’m now pleased to call them our friends and whenever we are in Andalusia we try whenever possible to visit them … often detouring by several hours to be able to go and say hello. I can’t recommend a stay with them highly enough.

Fabulous is the word to describe our stay at Posada San Marcos in the charming town of Alajar, Spain. The property is perfectly located on a quiet part of the village, but easily walkable to all the bars and restaurants. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. The terraces looking out to the pool and views of the forests and hills are stunning. Lucy and Angel, the owners and hosts were very helpful in the walks in the area. It is a beautiful town and we would not consider staying anywhere else in Alajar. Just perfection!

This eco-friendly posada in Alájar is truly special. Lucy and Angel are exceptional hosts and have created an inviting and extremely comfortable low carbon footprint inn. With their expert guidance I had a wonderful week of walking in the gorgeous nature park Sierra de Aracena and visiting the unique heritage protected whitewashed villages. Lucy’s home cooked meals were amazing! Thank you Lucy and Angel for making me feel at home at Posada San Marcos. I would love to return someday.

I cannot recommend a holiday at Posada San Marcos highly enough. The countryside is beautiful and if walking is not your thing then village life is a delight and the posada itself a haven of peace and quiet. Lucy and Angel go out of their way to make sure all of their guests needs are catered for - Lucy's cooking, Angel's local knowledge and their generosity with their time (as well as patience in our case!) make the whole experience very spoiling indeed. If you are only thinking of 3 or 4 nights book another - you won't regret it!

Angel and Lucy are great hosts that make you feel like one of the family! The hotel is ecofriendly while maintaining a high level of comfort and brilliant decor! Lucy's cooking is flawless whether it was a typical spanish dish or a vegetarian meal - I wanted to bring Lucy home with me permanently, and I was not upset at all to not have much time to dedicate to the surrounding restaurants. Both Lucy and Angel will entertain you with stories of travels, life as an expat, history... I only wish I could have stayed longer. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and I am already plotting when I will be able to return!

A perfect location for relaxing and walking in the Sierra de Aracena. Lucy and Angél offer a warm welcome and plenty of advice to ensure we took full advantage of the area, including a handy GPS device pre-loaded with walks which proved fail-safe!
Lucy and Angél's commitment to, and passion for, the environment is exemplary and reflected in all aspects of the Posada - from its ground-source heating through to locally sourced produce.
We enjoyed suppers in local Alájar restaurants as well as three-course dinners at the Posada courtesy of Lucy whose cooking is excellent. Breakfasts reflect local traditions, including both savoury pastes and olive oil, honey and fresh walnuts. Excellent coffee too.
The rooms are simple but clean, with comfortable beds, and a lovely outlook over the gardens and pool. It's a lovely pool - cold in November, as you would expect - but doubtless refreshing in the hotter months.
We did a guided walk with Angél who is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and learned a lot about the local area and its bountiful nature. Iberian pork is a particularly speciality.
Overall, a good base for walking, with easy access to Arecena, Linares and Almonaster, and a warm and welcoming oasis in the small village of Alájar.

A wonderful place to stay in a beautiful setting. Lucy & Angel made you feel like a part of their family. We stayed for more days than we planned and enjoyed every moment of it. I highly recommend the place for those looking to get away from the huzzle and buzzle of everyday life.

A wonderful location for a walking holiday. Angel and Lucy have produced very good guides, lovely breakfasts and traditional recipes for dinner. Do try the in house sherry tasting and ham carving session led by Angel - no better ambassador for things Andalusian. Every walk and recommendation was just right for us.

Absolutely fantastic. Angel and Lucy are excellent hosts. Lucy ran the walking holiday which we arranged through Sherpa and was always on hand whenever help was needed. The posada is clean and beautifully presented and an ' honesty' bar, excellent rooms and a lovely garden with a swimming pool all contributed to the enjoyment of our stay there. We would not hesitate to return.

The best hotel we have ever stayed at. Most welcoming and helpful hosts. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. Very comfortable room. The dinners were absolutely delicious. So many walks in the area, many from the front door. For us, it was the perfect place to stay. We are recommending it to all our friends.

We've just stayed for three nights, and this is a real gem. The hosts Angel and Lucy are very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. The accommodation is superb, and is lovingly furnished in a rustic individual style that really works. It is also environmentally friendly where possible. Breakfast is self-service with a choice of fruit, juices, cereals, yogurt and locally sourced breads with home-made preserves. Tea or coffee is served with a smile. We had one evening meal which was delicious. There is a well-stocked " honesty" bar that has all the usual drinks and also some local beers. If you are holidaying in the area this place is a must.

Spent a very enjoyable week here in February. The accommodation is clean and comfortable and they provide a lovely breakfast, with home made patë and jam included. Alàjar is a beautiful village in a beautiful part of the world. There are fantastic walking routes from the doorstep of the hotel. Posada San Marcos is a great choice if you are looking for a walking holiday in the region. The hotel owners are friendly and knowledgeable and could not have been more helpful when we stayed; providing advice and recommendations on walking routes, places to eat locally (though they do offer delicious evening meals at Posada San Marcos as well) and events in the area.
