Absolutely amazing place on the Caribbean Sea and at the mouth of the Rio Dulce. The people are wonderful and this place is alive with culture, both Guatemalan and Garifuna! A great little get away from the beaten path....there are no roads to get here, only by way of boat!! Either across the bay or down the Rio Dulce and both are great adventures!!

Go beyond, beyond, and seek the roots of its origins, that in itself makes culture surfing, in Livingston, the thing to do, just watch, observe, this mosaic of different groups, intertwined. But, this is the turf of the Garinagus.I as a Guatemalan, that currently lives here, recommend just to study its history first hand and understand that this little town, is una bomba cultural!. To think that the Garinagu once upon a time, were snachted, kidnapped from Africa and that, thank god their ship went down on the coasts of San Vincent, and then they were saved and embraced by the Caribs , later blending and interloving, in a god circumstantial intervention. THey did not go though slavery like an afrikan American, perhaps in a tabacco plantation.Their history is not stained by the whip and humiliation. Although, later after fighting British invasion with their afrikan slaves, brother against brother, they were captured and expelled from San Vincent, again, loosing their roots, and shipped to Roatán Island.5000, people! only, 2,500 made the journey. It was till 1802 That they came to Guatemala, to Lívingston, venturing for new lands. But they came here with a strong identity, with pride. FOOD, DANCE, and their own personal spiritual cosmovisión linked strongly to their ancestors, make Livingston, a masterpiece of cultural heritage, to humanity.
