ATITLAN EXPEDITIONS

We had a great time birding with Rolando. He organised a private boat from San Pedro for us leaving at 5am, then we were driven mirador Rey Tepepul before a short walk into the reserve. We saw many species of birds through a very good scope, including a rare azure dumped tanager. Rolando was very knowledgeable and had good English.

We didn’t see a quetzal so organised another trip to go halfway up mount Atitlán. On this trip we stayed the night prior in Santiago and had a fairly steep 2 hour walk in. Although we briefly saw a quetzal but it didn’t stay long enough for any photos, we appreciated that Rolando made the extra effort to find one for us. We would go again if we were staying longer.

Alfredo took us out looking for Quetzals and we saw 7 of them, along with other birds. Alfredo was kind and very knowledgeable. This company is professional and responsive to messages. We all agreed that this was our favorite activity in Lake Atitlan.

The perfect birding tour! Rolando is an incredible guide, and had everything organized perfectly. We needed to take a boat across the lake at 5:30am for the 6am bird tour and the boat was there early and everything was perfectly planned. We saw 22 different species of birds and most importantly, the rare glorious sighting of the country's bird, the Quetzales (male and female). The hike itself was a medium strenuous hike and Rolando was so thoughtful and patient waiting for the birds to come and explaining the birds to us. He has this amazing telephoto lens that made seeing the birds up close such a clear view. The only thing to note for the uphill car ride from the Santiago dock to the Tepupal reserve is that it's a truck, so while one of us could ride in the passenger seat, the others needed to sit in the back of the open truck. They drove safely, but felt worth mentioning so you're not surprised.
