Mel's Botanical Retreat is a unique place to stay and a vacation there is an unforgettable experience in every way.

First of all, I have to say that we had booked the newer "Blue Mahoe" cottage, but due to an error in the description we were then transferred to the larger "Garden Oasis" cottage at no extra cost.

Unfortunately, the namesake Mel passed away two years ago and her daughter Kiara is no longer on site because of her training. As such, the farm and AirBnB is currently run by Mel's sister Kayon and her husband Patrick.

Anyone who comes to the farm experiences Jamaica in all its facets. The 8km-long but around 40-minute drive from the general road to the farm can only really be mastered with an SUV because of the very, very bad condition with deep potholes. If you take a private car or taxi down, the return trip to the beach or nearby attractions costs around USD 60, which is about the same as a rental car for the day.

We actually wanted to use the accommodation as a starting point for excursions with the rental car in the area, but we only did that every other day because of the very strenuous drive.

It wasn't the worst decision, however, as the location of the cabins, surrounded by exotic trees and plants, is simply indescribably beautiful. Despite the many animals and exotic noises, we slept with the window and patio door open and felt safe.

The lack of air conditioning is not a problem as it cools down pleasantly at night. But don't be afraid of geckos and lizards, as they can get through the centimeter-wide cracks between the boards of the house even when the doors are closed.

There is no hot water in the "Garden Oasis". That's why we always used the garden shower of the adjacent "Blue Mahou" cottage for showering. The rainwater shower heated with solar energy with a view of nature was a special experience in itself.

The accommodation's kitchen lacked the most basic utensils such as bottle openers, small spoons, pans, etc. and was therefore unusable for cooking. However, we were offered the use of the communal kitchen, from where we only took a coffee machine for our obligatory morning coffee to the accommodation. For an extra fee, Kayon prepared us a superb Caribbean breakfast using the farm's freshest ingredients each morning, and in addition when we weren't leaving the property, an equally delicious dinner.

The personal contact and the very interesting conversations with the hosts gave us a deep insight into the Jamaican culture, which was certainly one of the biggest pluses of the accommodation.

In summary, one can say that the accommodation is suitable for all those who do not value 5-star amenities with beach and sea every day, but want to learn more about the country and its people.

Thank you Kayon and Patrick for a memorable stay!

Staying at Mel's was such an incredible experience! I travelled with my two children (9 and 19 years old), and we all enjoyed Mel's friendliness, helpfulness, and amazing cooking. We traveled to the beach with her and greatly appreciated all the local tips she shared. Being up on the mountain is extra special with the beautiful views, the many botanicals and gardens, and all the little creatures from birds, lizards and insects. We thought the outdoor shower was fun, and appreciated the sun-warmed water to use (even if cooler than what we are used to). We enjoyed the comforts within the Garden Oasis but also loved the communal space that is just a short private walk away. Not only are Mel and her daughter extremely nice, but everyone we met near Mel's was friendly. I can't say enough about how much I loved staying here. It felt like a home away from home with all the care that Mel bestows on her guests. I can't wait to go back!

This is a unique and wonderful experience to stay at Mel's. She is a great host with a great spirit and will make you feel like family. The farm is beautiful, with plenty fruits and vegetables, and delicious coffee. The cabanas have magnificent views over the mountains and the sea. Mel's food is so good. Everything about our stay here was perfect. Every meal Mel cooked was some of the best food we have ever had. All food items were fresh and from the land. We had a tour guide (Cruise) take us on a hike down to Bluefields Beach and we enjoyed a few Red Stripes before making the trek back up the mountain. Mel had a driver (Rowan) pick us up from the airport and also dropped us off when it was time to go right on time.

100% recommend staying with Mel if you are looking for peace and relaxation while experiencing the real side of Jamaica. We will be back!!

Excellent time! This is a great place to see a beautiful part of Jamaica that most never see. Mel's food and hospitality really made our 20th anniversary special. This is not a 5 star resort. This is for people who want to get in the mountains and take in some nature. I had a blast grabbing a drink with the locals at the corner pub. Everyone needs an experience like this. We did half beach and half Mel time for a well-rounded vacation. Returning again this year!

This place is an absolute gem!!
If you want to experience the “real” Jamaica as opposed to the tourist experience then go to this remote jungle getaway hosted by the lovely Melessia who truly made me feel part of the family. The food is amazing. The views are sublime. The community is so kind and colorful. The cabins are beautiful. (And a bargain) I almost don’t want anyone to know about this treasure I found, but I am writing a review anyway simply because in my many years of world travel this is one of the best experiences I have had. It’s off the beaten path up on the mountain, but I was still able to make excursions to bluefields and treasure beach and Sav and Negril etc but the highlight of it all was just being “home” at Mel’s.

Magnificent in every way, the people, the place, the food, the vibe. Magical secluded mountain top retreat. We loved it can't wait to return to deepen our connection to the Kentucky community, the gorgeous environment of tropical plants and wildlife and the kind and loving spirit of Jamaica.
