St. Sebastian's National Shrine - Kandana | සාන්ත සෙබස්තියන් ජාතික සිද්ධස්ථාŞ

Rev. Fr. Joachim Alberto purchased a small piece of land called Haamuduruwange watte at Nadurupititya in Kandana and put up a small cadjan chapel and placed a picture of St. Sebastian for the benefit of his small congregation. In 1837 with the help of the devotees, he dug a small well of which water was used for drinking and bathing and today this well is still operative. He bought several acres of land including the present cemetery premises. Moreover, he had put up the church at Kalaeliya in honour of his patron St. Joachim where his body has been laid to rest according to his wish of the Last will attested by Weerasinghe Arachchige Brasianu Thilakaratne. Notary public dated 19th of July 1855. Present Church was built on the property bought on the 13th of August 1875 on deed no. 146 attested by Graciano Fernando.

Sebastian's Church, Kandana is a very important place of worship for me as a Catholic. Various miracles are reported to have taken place there. Sometimes a busy place, you have the opportunity to pick up two relics of Sebastian Munindrayana. It is celebrated in the month of January and is a famous church in Sri Lanka.If you are a Catholic, this is a must visit church ....

A miraculous religious place. Most people visit here for healing and asking help from st.Sebastian. Most of them believe that their wishes come true. I am having my own experience on this place. January 21st is the church festival day. Most people visiting the church on Mondays and Thursdays. Thursday is known to be the day for st.Sebastian

A place of worship for over 130 years. Miraculous water well that many claims healing from diseases. Many pilgrims visit this beautiful Shrine of St Sebastian, situated in Kandana Sri Lanka, few minutes drive from International Airport.

St. Sebastian's Shrine Kandana is a shrine which holds a historical value. This church is dedicated to St. Sebastian who was a war hero as well as a saint who is known for curing diseases. This church holds historical stories about the miracles of St. Sebastian. And this shrine has a relic of St. Sebastian which is worshiped by hundreds of people all over the country for their strong belief to St. Sebastian. As a saint who is known for curing diseases, this shrine has a separate bathing pools for both male and female pilgrims to wash themselves with the belief that when you wash with this holy waters the diseases within you will go off in the holy blessings of St. Sebastian. A mission house of priests situated in the back of the church are always looking forward to help and guide the pilgrims towards god in blessings, conversations and many other services. To the left there is the 'Sanctus' which is a church that holds the Holy Eucharist is a mind calming and a relaxing place for the pilgrims who wish to develop their spiritual life. A church which runs along for over 150 years is a miraculous place among the pilgrims who visit this place in hundreds daily.

This is one of the colourful feast which brings more devotees specially the Catholics. The Annual feast kick start with hoisting of the flag and followed with daily novenas with the participation of devotees of Kandana and its outskirts. History records that in 1831 this church was only a hut made of Cadjan and planks

Church Feast is on the 20th of January. Many stalls selling all kinds of goods are built along the Church Road during the feast period. A famous church, where the entire town celebrates and people come there from all over the island during this time.

I will always remember this church close to my heart seldom visited but this visit has a life meaningful which I've spent over 2 hours before Christ..
