There was a Jewish Community of Figuig until the middle of the 20th Century. A synagogue and two Jewish cemeteries, in Zenaga and this one, in Ouled Slimane that belonged to Jews from Ksar Oudaghir as well the existence of a Mellah, are evidence of a longstanding Jewish presence in the area.
In 1921 there were 200 Jews in Figuig, and only 100 Jews in Figuig lived in the 1950s. The community was mostly comprised of the Assouline, Benchetrit, Bensaïd, Benitah and Amsallem families who maintain strong ties with the city.
In 1961, there was only one Jew left. Nowadays there is no Jewish presence in Figuig.
Cemetery is surrounded by newly restored high wall. There is a closed gate from the east side, but nobody has a key. From the north, there is a hole under the wall, and that’s the only access point.
Cemetery is flat, only 2 men made tombs above ground are visible. Most of the graves are invisible and only part of the tombstones with Hebrew writing engraved in natural stone can be found. Pieces of stones with Hebrew letters on them are scattered all over the surface of the cemetery, but its hard to find them, because of the erosion, caused by weather, rain, sun. Few pieces of tombstones are still readable, like tombstone of Pircha bat Yaakov from 1908, Shlomo Atzban from 1878, Yitzhak ben Abraham Amsallem.
