Clock Tower

The Taiping Clock Tower was originally constructed as a wooden building in 1881, and served as the first police station in Taiping. At the time, it was constructed it sat “at a point about equidistant from the Chinese theatre, the market and other much frequented places”, in what would have been Taiping’s main square. It was popularly known as The Fort among locals. It was later rebuilt in 1891 as a fortified stone building.
In 1908, the building began to serve a dual purpose, that of Taiping’s police station, as well as its fire station. This was considered to be the very first fire brigade in the Federated Malay States. The clock tower itself, a fortified tower with chamfered slits for gun slots was most probably erected much later. A wind vane in the shape of a rooster sat at the peak of the tower. The Clock Tower continued to serve as a police station till it was abandoned in 1950.
The building was originally a square-shaped fortified structure, but some of the building was demolished after the 1950s. The entire building itself would have been demolished save for the good sense of the authorities that later decided to conserve the building. The building fell into disrepair several times, but much effort has been put into refurbishing and restoring the building in recent years. In 2018 restoration works were completed and the clock began chiming again after a 10-year silence.
Not to be missed is the red phone booth just outside the tower, the only one of its kind still in its original location in Taiping.
The Taiping Clock Tower served as the main Tourist Information Center in Taiping in the days preceding the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia. It is now temporarily closed to the public, but the exterior is still accessible and makes for some really good photography. It is an iconic landmark of Taiping, and a must-visit for history, architecture, and photography aficionados.

Great place to explore. Books from all categories are available for all ages. The atmosphere is spacious, cool and beautiful with a café at home and you may be surprised by the artist's corner that has changed from time to time. Last time I found the local treaers who were displayed here, this time by another local callographer. You may get a chance to buy a beautiful craft by local artists. Excellent!!
It is a charming oasis of literary bliss. The surrounding and comfortable environment creates a welcome haven for book lovers. The store's interior is nothing less than stunning, with its elegant aesthetics and thoughtful layout.
I love the design and interior of this bookstore! Lots of books to choose from. Seats are provided for those interested in reading in the bookstore. There is also a nice spacious café and souvenir section inside the Tsutaya books.
Their staff are helpful and polite. I asked them to help me find books by a Chinese author and show me where the books are. This is a bookstore worth visiting. It will definitely reappear in the future.
Every corner invites exploration, inviting visitors to get lost amid shelves full of literary treasures. Warm lighting and comfortable seating areas add to the overall charm, making it an ideal place to immerse yourself in the world of books.
However, many of the products here are a bit expensive.

The Clock Tower

There are two clock towers in Taiping - one is next to the wet market and one is THE Clock Tower that's now the tourist center as seen in the picture below. The clock tower was built in 1881 by using timber, and rebuilt again in 1891 by using brick. This fort-like building was once used as a police station. Today the clock tower functions perfectly well as a tourist center that provides visitors with maps and information of Taiping. You'll also be able to find out about the "33 Firsts of Taiping" here.

One of the significant landmark in Taiping which represents the culture and traditional building style in old Taiping. It is currently a Taiping Visitor Tourism Center but unfortunately it most likely does not open during weekend and holidays.
