Sherpa Culture Museum

Sonam is a legend . His museum is fabulous , a work of love. The photo gallery is a vivid glimpse into the almost hallucinogenic Tibetan buddhist world. The Sherpa came from Tibet to settle in the "Beyul" , or hidden paradise, of the Khumbu. Sonam lost his hearing aged 10 to meningioma. Edmund Hilary arranged his trip to St George's Hospital London to try to restore it for him.
Sadly he is still profoundly deaf but this didn't stop him. He's built an whole authentic Tibetan home which brings to life every book you've read on Tibetan life. We have Sonam's Kongde panoramic photograph on our wall in England (every panoramic you see in Kathmandu and Lukla Airport was shot by Sonam) and look forward to seeing that view ourselves one day soon. We've visited Kumjung but not Kongde. I really hope we can visit again soon, see what he's done with the new museum he was building last time we were there. What a guy and an unmissable museum. 2 nights in Namche are essential for acclimatisation, preferably 3 nights if you can, so go visit while you're there.

Exceptional. A must-visit when in Namche. An extensive collection of history from the area, with a key focus on Sherpa heroes. Highly recommend and well worth it, could spend several hours here if you’re interested.

Very detailed museum, we spent more than an hour and we even didnt read everything. So much information about the region, sherpas, expeditions etc. Worth the visit!

Located just beside Sagarmatha National Park Head Quarter, 100 mtr above from namche bazaar, nepal

November 2022 was the first time I visited the Museum even though I had been in the region a couple of times before. The level of documentation curator Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa has done over the years of the culture, and landscape of the region is commendable. A visit to the museum helped me understand the history and culture even more through his photography and the display of Sherpa artifacts. The museum also showcases in-depth the history of mountaineering in the Everest region. Without a doubt, a must-visit place for everyone who is coming to the Everest region.

Amazing and not to be missed. The owners are lovely and the museum is just world class, recently expanded.

Excellent museum, fantastic photographs documenting sherpa culture and mountaineering history in the Solukhumbu. Plus speaking with Sonam (the curator) is really wonderful, he is such an interesting and captivating person :-)

One of the best places to see Mt Everest on clear day other than base camp itself. Infact the view here is better as one can see Mt Everest, Lotse and Ama dablam.

Recommend one to visit this on EBC trek.

Bellísimo lugar con vistas espectaculares

Ein Sherpa-Haus mit Stallungen, Wohnräumen und Haustempel zeigt anschaulich das beschwerliche Leben der Menschen im Hochgebirge. Der Inhaber hat alle Gegenstände fein säuberlich beschriftet und erklärt, das gesamte Museum ist liebevoll hergerichtet. Auch die Fotosammlung zur Kultur und Tradition der Sherpa ist sehr lehrreich, ebenso die umfangreiche Sammlung zu den Everest-Expeditionen. Der Aufstieg aus Namche lohnt sich sehr!
