Jewish cemetery of Horta

The Jewish cemetery which was built in 1852 and is one of four Jewish cemeteries in the Azores, is located there between the former monastery of the Carmelite Order in Horta and the city's central cemetery. It is accessible via Rua de Comendador Macedo.
The small site has an estimated floor area of ​​around 200 square meters. It is surrounded by a white-painted wall and is about three meters high.

The first burial took place in 1864, when Abraão Abisdid - one of the buyers of the property - was buried there.

17 burials only are dated from 1864 to 1943, all have an east-west orientation.

In 1887, the community's rabbi, Mayer Pinto, left the island, and the Jewish community ceased to exist. A single community member remained to look after the cemetery. After his death, his descendants took over the care. Two more individual burials followed in 1920 and 1943. With the burial of Moisés Benarus in 1943, the last member of Horta's Jewish community died.
In 1983 the cemetery became the property of the Jewish Community of Lisbon. The care remained in the hands of Moisés Benarus' descendants.
