An ancient city you have to visit!

It's a great place to see for people who enjoy history. Yet, the city is not to old, but it represents the perriods starying from 1-st century BC. Some objects are being renovated, but the mosaics are still waiting for it's turn to show their beauty.

Anamurium is the remains of a hellenistic city that was also once a Roman province. It has so much history that when you walk around, you can feel something spiritual. If you plan to visit, bring your bathing suit because the water is incredible. You can also imagine what Cleopatra must have felt when she got this coast as a gift from Mark Anthony.

Well preserved Odeon, very windy ancient city ruins. In summer, it is open until 7pm but in winter, till 5pm. Currently, the cost of entry is 12.5TRY.

Anamurium must have been quite the place back in the 5th century AD - a large city with substantial buildings. They are working at preserving or rebuilding some structures. Totally worth the stop if you are interested in ancient cities/history.

ANCIENT CITY OF ANAMURIUM

Although there is no definitive information about the history of Anemurium, which was built on the east-facing slopes of Anamur Cape, located at the extreme point in the south of Anatolia, written sources estimate that the city was founded in the 4th century BC.

In the city, which became known during British Colonel Francis Beaufor's explorations in the Mediterranean in the 19th century, surface research was initiated in 1960 by Elisabeth Alfoldi Rosenbaum from the University of Toronto, Canada. Later, Prof. from British Colombia University, Canada. The excavations and restoration works carried out under the direction of James Russel were terminated in 1998.

The eye-catching structures in Anemurium, which consists of two parts, the upper and lower city, include walls, 3 baths, a 60-meter wide unfinished theater and an odeon (concert hall) with seating for 900 people.

The ancient city, which means windy place and where walls were first built around it in the 1st century AD, was briefly visited by Kommagene King IV. It also came under the rule of Antiochos (38-72 AD). Its geographical proximity to Cyprus enabled it to be used as an intermediate station during the Roman Period.

The city, which is connected by land to Germaniopolis, one of the most important Roman cities in the Taurus Mountains, was also an important center for the trade of natural resources in the region. The region, which has been under the domination of the Sassanids, Isaurians and Arabs throughout history, came under Turkish rule with the Seljuks and Karamanoğulları starting from the 12th century.

In Anemuruim, one of the best-preserved cities of Cilicia, the land rises with a slight slope, starting from the port. The walls surround the city in a semicircle. The cemetery, which is outside the walls and constitutes the best-preserved necropolis area in Anatolia, is one of the points of interest.

Around 350 barrel-vaulted, two-storey, one- or two-room tombs, as well as aqueducts and church ruins dating back to the 4th and 1st centuries BC can also be visited. "The mosaics unearthed in the city are exhibited in the Anamur Museum."

Great outdoor museum, wonderful beach. There are theater halls ... which have historic ancient baths. Commagene kingdom The Roman empire has come to many civilizations like the sasanis. Do not come and see. Entrance fee is 6 lira.. 2 hours from Mersin.

It is way more to see and explore than in other more famous turkish antic kents, how ever many times less tourists

A vast site where you can roam and explore to your heart's content. Central structures - odeon, baths, necropolis - are no doubt stunning, but it's ability to wander untethered that made it so special for me. Entry fee still 12.5tl (Mar 2022)

A Roman ancient city with ruins of public buildings, theater and necropolis, located at the seashore where you can have an excellent swim in pristine waters and enjoy the pebble beach. Well worth visiting, both for the history and a swim.

it’s so beautiful place! really impressive. you can also swim in the beach of the ancient city. the only thing is they are closing at 5 and there’s no entry after 4:30 pm in winter time.

A superb antique roman site that deserves more tourists. The sea with crystal clear water is walking distance from Anamurium. The sea where Anamurium is located is also one of the best scuba-diving and snorkeling sites in Turkey.

Very original and not fully excavated. But still impressive to walk among the ruins. Bring good shoes...

A very bif ancient city ahowing that this was the center of the region. Still the port is under water which gives a peefect view when you are swimming. Shortly a must visit place. I hope more of the city will be openned by the arqeologists so that the beauty will be seen
