JUST 11 kilometres off Njombe-Songea road, stands Uwemba Mission.

The mission was established by Roman Catholic’s Benedictine Fathers in 1931 through the work of Padre Yosef Damm OSB.

If you visit there today, you find a big church, St. Anna Hospital, Uwemba Primary School and other well-structured fathers’ and sisters’ buildings. The vision of Padre Yosef was timeless, selfless and strategic.

Just behind the church, there is an old fuel station and a garage. The evidence that Uwemba had already developed as a modern township since 1930s.

Visiting Uwemba Mission is like time travelling. It is 2023 but you’re travelling through decades and decades of modernization, Catholicism and Ujamaa.

Hadn’t be the government’s decision to have all Christian dioceses headquartered in Njombe (the district centre).

Uwemba was posed to host Roman Catholic diocese.

Not so much has been done over the years, making Uwemba’s development stagnant.
