Great Northern Cafe

A not so hidden gem to those familiar with the area! The French toast is absolutely amazing and my favorite item there, but to be fair I haven't tried much of anything else after trying the French toast. It's not sweet or dry like some places and they typically don't skimp on the butter either. If you like French toast, it will ruin other French toast for you, lol.

The service is always wholesome and fits a small town diner stereotype, in a good way! We always love whichever waitress we get. One thing to note is they only take cash, but there is an ATM in the building. It's a small building, but they make great use of the space. They have mostly booths/half booths but you can move the tables on the half booths, which is nice. It's nothing fancy, but those are my types of places. Parking is ample, yet always seems full, but there's usually always still room to sit inside if the parking lot looks full.

They have a nice variety of selections, and some items you don't usually see. The kids menu has a fun variety as well. The prices are good for the portions and experience.

If you're in the area and love small town diners, visiting is a must.

Stopped for fathers Day on Sunday. What a busy place, and now I know why! The food is so hot, fresh, and delicious. The server was fast and attentive even tho she was very busy! I couldn't believe it! Will definitely be coming back. I got the German omelet with blueberry pancake, and everyone was sampling my pancake! 😉 my dad got the American omelet, and my mom got the half order of biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs. We added gravy to our hashbrowns, and I am glad we did. It was so hot and creamy. wanted to try it, but she did not want to share. She said it was so good!

Ordered the basic breakfast. Eggs were the way I liked them, hashbrowns were not over cooked, sausage links were good. Toast and coffee was good, fast service and hot food, what's not to like.

Great little breakfast diner. Very friendly staff. Generous portions came out super quick and were very reasonably priced. Biscuits and Gravy, Corned Beef Hash, and Great Northern Omelette all got thumbs up. Highly recommended!

Was surprised to find out they're cash or check only but they have an ATM so no biggy.

Super pleased with the Country Fried Steak I got this morning, it was suggested to me by my aunt who lives in the area and I'm super thankful I heeded her advice.

The biscuits are a more dense kind of biscuit but they're good, the gravy was excellent and went really well with the Country Fried Steak.
I also really liked their coffee, all in all whenever I'm back up here I'd for sure come back.

If you’re looking for a hometown cafe that brings you back in time a few years to a simpler time with massive portions…kinda like grandmas house, then this is the place! Good, simple, and comforting food at a decent price. Perhaps it’s nostalgia speaking, but even if it is, I love this place!

The food was superb and the service was good. Gypsy had the patty melt. I had a baccon cheese burger with cheese nuggets. The place was clean and well maintained. We will definitely return when we are in the area. Stop by if you like home cooked!

The food is always amazing!! Great place to grab breakfast and lunch! Highly recommend!

Was there on a Monday at about 11am. Got a northern burger and fries. Order came fast, food was good, got a huge pile of crinkle fries, staff was fast and friendly. Place surprisingly pretty busy for the time. Good stuff. 👍

The restaurant was very busy today when I came in there. The waitress We’re doing a awesome job for how busy it was. The waitress I had her name is Geri She did a awesome job babe I believe very nice to customers. I food was pretty good I come back again I love the atmosphere

Most of the staff is friendly and I've only had one bad waitress. Her friends came first and I asked her who was our waitress and she kept talking to them before taking our order. So we won't sit in her spot anymore.

Wonderful breakfast today. My Server was very kind, and the food was quick. I ordered the Empire Builder omelette— they mean business with this thing. Cash only, FYI.

I enjoyed so many things about my experience here. The staff was so friendly and easy to talk to. The Cafe has a great atmosphere and you can feel the history. The food was great! The french toast was huge and delicious. I will definetley be returning to this location.

What a awesome place!! Sometimes the best food comes from the little hole in the wall places….it was great!!

Delicious food; kind hearted service. Highly recommended. Absolutely worth the drive from Itasca State Park. The “End of the Line” dish was amazing. The Walleye was fresh and flakey.

The food was excellent. The waitress was amazing, answered all our questions, and recommended some cool places in town to visit.

We had a wonderful experiance this morning getting breakfast here. The prices where fair, the food delicious and the staff was very friendly and made sure we had what we needed. I havnt been here in years and they are just as good if not better for their omlettes than I remember.

The fastest kitchen staff as our delicious food was on our table in under 10 minutes while the place was packed.

Great little cafe with lots of locally historical items and photos. Food was delicious and service was great. Very cheap place.
