Very beautiful drive to the fortress and amazing views at the fortress itself! Worth visiting if you’re in the area even with the long drive. In winter it’s quite inaccessible by car though so be prepared.

If you go in the winter it’s free, but don’t get fooled, your car will not pass through the snow from the intersection to the main road. You need to walk. It is not 3km like google map says, it is 6km so plan accordingly. With that said, very beautiful, you feel like in the medieval times seeing it from a distance all alone. Quite a beautiful hike as well

Amberd Fortress is an impressive historical monument in Armenia, situated on the slopes of Mount Aragats, near the town of Byurakan. Its location on the high slopes adds an additional character, making it an essential part of Armenia's cultural and architectural heritage. The fortress is an ideal place for those who want to delve into the rich history of the region and enjoy exceptional views from the heights.

The fortress is located far on the slopes of Aragat. Nearby, you can find Vahramashen Church, which also looks great. There are also some people selling souvenirs and some snacks outside. The toilets are clean enough. I was warned by my guide not to go too deep into the ruins because it could be dangerous due to falling rocks.

Not that many people were visiting.

The drive to the fortress from Yerevan is superb. We came in the autumn and the colours of the shrubs and trees was a delight. The ruined fortress and nearby restored ancient church are well worth climbing down to and it is not difficult to imagine how tough one would have had to been in order to survive in such a place in winter.

Beauteous remnants! It a bit difficult to get there, via narrow mountain roads. But it is well worth the effort. To get all the way to the top like I did you need to have some strength, the rocks are not everywhere are weakling friendly ) but when you finally take a hold of that iron rod with Armenian flag on top, you feel a bit like a mad wizard from the Lord of the Rings) Not all objects in the area are restored, you can see some remnants not far away. I did not see any guards or anything of the sort, so take care of yourself, do not get hurt... Seems like a zipline could be nice, over the ravine.

Beautiful fortress on a mountain between two valley. The views from up there are amazing. The whole site including castle itself can be visited in c.30 mins. The trip is well worth it especially if you are on your way to mount Aragats.

One of the most beautiful Armenian churches. It's a long drive but worth it, along with the Amberd Castle

A 10th-century fortress located 2,300 meters (7,500 ft) above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Aragats at the confluence of the Arkashen and Amberd rivers in the province of Aragatsotn, Armenia. The name translates to "fortress in the clouds" in Armenian. It is also the name incorrectly attributed to Vahramashen Church, the 11th-century Armenian church near the castle. The village of Byurakan is 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) from the site of Amberd.

The site started as a Stone Age settlement. During the Bronze Age and Urartian periods, a fortress had been built that is now obsolete. Some sources say that Amberd used to be a summer residence for kings. The castle of Amberd and some sections of walls were constructed in the 7th century.
