The Canadian Flagpole at Regatta Point

This is, indeed, a very tall flag pole.

Displaying the Australian Flag most of the time, this flag’s title comes from the CPI try that gifted it to Australia - Canada.

Having originally been offered as a gift in the 1930’s, there were some fairly significant transport concerns of how on earth to get it to Canberra. Officially gifted to Australia in 1955, a monumental amount of effort was put into getting it here safely. The trip between Sydney to Canberra included a crane traveling behind the trucks to place the pole back onto the vehicles every time they went around a corner.

The flag pole is a single spar of Douglas Fir, weighing over 7 tonne. It’s 39 meters long, 3 meters of which is under ground.

On the 1st of July, every year, the Flag is changed over to celebrate Canada Day. Not a bad day to come and have a look.

The flag pole is near a small museum, a visitor information Centre and a cafe. Nearby are public toilets, a play ground and some BBQs. This is not going to be easy to access for the ground level for anyone with mobility issues (the ground is quite steep), but you could certainly admire it from inside the building or on the deck.
