Worth a visit

Please do not confuse the Opal Bug with Kosta’s Olympic Opal Centre across the street run by an elderly and knowledgeable man also by the name of Kosta. They are different businesses.

Worth the look

The owner sounds like he loves his job, but he uses very unpleasant and aggressive sale strategies, and is honestly trying to rip people off. Our budget of $50 was small, sure, but all he offered us was a bunch of tiny $10 triplets. He even said he could give me a discount and I could sell them to tourists to make money. Unreal! I did see some small, better looking opals for $30 on display, but he insisted I should buy those teensy triplets "and make some profit". I'm here to buy opals as a souvenir, not to make money! We went to another shop up the road and we were kindly presented with all sorts of beautiful little opals and fossilised opals within our budget, and it was a much better experience than The Opal Bug...

Also after 5 minutes in the shop the guy started arguing about the vaccine and conspiracy theories. No thank you. I also agree with previous comments his covid contact tracing paperwork is strange. He wants to know people's address even though the form says email address or phone number. He insisted we put our residential address, so I wrote something vague. I don't mind that he doesn't have a QR Code (probably doesn't know what a QR code is) but he doesn't need everyone's residential address and full name. A first name and phone number or email address is enough.

Also the place stinks like cigarette smoke. Personally as a non-smoker I hated it, and it was so strong it also bothered my partner who is a smoker.

I don't recommend this place. In fact, and I don't say this lightly, I highly recommend you avoid it at all costs.

Bad smoking smell inside shop, owner very unfriendly! we smell smoking as soon as we open the door, and we decided not going into the shop, then the owner came to us forced us to sign the Covid-19 paper, he don’t offer the barcode for SA Covid-19 app, he must want to do something for the guest name and numbers.

BEWARE!!!!! After spending ages deciding on a ring and agreeing to purchase it at the "QUOTED"price of $690 I was stunned and disgusted while we were organising resizing to be told the price had just gone up by $1000 to $1690 with no explanation. Naturally I walked out and to add insult to injury I was offered a fridge magnet as I left. I have since found many more beautiful shops and purchased my opal ring elsewhere without any unpleasant incident. BEWARE!!!!
