Extremely high-quality, well curated, and modern little museum for such a small town, with an extremely in-depth collection of photo negatives from the gold-rush era. All within a beautifully restored heritage building with re-instated signage that really helps one to become immersed in the people and history of the town and the wider region.

Very informative and knowledgeable staff, along with cute little gift shop.

Really enjoyed the experience at this fascinating piece of Australian history from the gold rush era. The photographs are outstanding. We were pleasantly surprised. It’s a definite must. Also, for lunch we ate at the Cobb’s takeaway & bakery. Scrumptious food and unbelievably affordable. We went on an ordinary Monday and much of the town was closed so would be better to go on the weekend.

Short Review: Amazing experience, lovely staff.

Long Review: When going in with family, I wouldn’t have thought it would be as bursting with life as it was. It looks tiny, but it is a treasure trove of information and photos. I highly recommend going here if in the area, visit the pioneers museum after (Also highly recommend).

Gulgong is a small town worth visiting just for the historic buildings and the gold rush history, but what makes this town stand out amongst other is this modern, well stocked and fascinating museum.

This really is a museum put together by professionals with hundreds of high quality pictures and stories from the gold rush era around Gulgong and Sydney. We were only thinking to stay for an hour or so not expecting much but were blown away and ended up staying for many hours including coming back after lunch (included in the price). The attendants on the day were knowledable about the material and presented some stories and background that I wouldn't have been able to easily get otherwise answering a number of questions.

I can't recommend this place enough, cheap as chips, and hands down the best regional museum I have visited.

I had an amazing time. The restoration that has been done to the building is so true to the time it was built. Well done to all those who worked on the project. The staff were terrific, very knowledgeable and so helpful. The entry prices are quite reasonable and you can leave and return later after lunch if you wish. This is an amazing piece of Gulgong history that has been preserved and the fact that the Holtermann family unknowingly had 3,500 old glass photo negatives of Gulgong in the gold rush days in perfect condition stored in their shed is just beyond priceless. I highly recommend this place for both history and photography buffs.

An excellent photographic museum which ultimately is a snapshot of the area in the gold rush year of 1872. Detailed information about the photographic process of the era also. A unique way to spend an hour or so.

Definitely worth seeing. This photographic exhibit is housed in two of the towns original buildings from Gulgongs gold rush days. Displaying the works of photographers Merlin, Bayliss and Bernhard Otto Holtermann this gives visitors a wonderful journey back to the times of the gold rush days. Modern touch screens throughout the museum allow you to view every picture in fascinating detail. I highly recommend this museum as a must see.
On a personal note, the black & white picture of the gold mining men working along Cooyal Creek that has been redone in full colour, outstanding!
