Meeting place with friends or making new acquaintances.
This a impressive place and really good view at night time.
It is said that this is the oldest train station in Australia. A must visit during your stay in Melbourne.

It is simply the best place in Melbourne for meeting up with friends or making new acquaintances. It's a great location for street photography since it's always a busy place. "Meet me under the clocks!"

Understood why the Melbourne have said "Meet me under the clocks" when visiting here. The iconic Flinders Street Station really impressed me while wandering around both at night and in daylight by the night lights and the atmosphere of the historic station. The station’s main building with its prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks is its grand. It is also the oldest train station in the whole of Australia and the busiest suburban railway station in the southern hemisphere.

Iconic meeting place in Melbourne. "Meet under the Flinders clocks" is a common phrase. A beautiful central train station and also an architectural marvel!!

Do you like clocks? Is knowing the international time important to you? Are you one to gravitate towards historical things? Well, meeting under the clocks does all these things. And best of all it's free.

Under the clocks, on the steps at the very front of Flinders Street Railway Station, a Melbourne icon, has been the meeting place for generations of people, in fact, since the 1860s when the clocks were first installed. It's a Melbourne tradition. Locally, we say "let's meet under the clocks" and everyone knows where to meet, even if you don't necessarily come into the city by train. As well as being a great meeting place, it's also a great place to people watch as you'll see all sorts of people strutting their fashion style and stuff. It's one of the busiest, if not the busiest, locations in Melbourne. In fact, in many ways, it's the centre of Melbourne. It's directly opposite Federation Square and most of Melbourne's trams run past it.

A bit of history; up until the 1970s the train departure times on these clocks were manually changed by a railway officer using a long pole. Then in 1983 the then Victorian Railways wanted to change them to digital clocks. The people of Melbourne protested so instead the old clocks have simply been upgraded to update remotely by computer. So, first installed in the 1860s, these beautiful old clocks are still working today. By the way, in case you didn't know, these clocks don't tell the time, but rather let people know how long it will be before their next train leaves.

Simply the best place to meet your friends in Melbourne or to meet and chat with completely unknown people. Really good spot for street photography as it is always a busy vibrant place 24 hours a day. For decades Melbourneites have said "Meet me under the clocks" and we all know where to go. From time to time Flinders Street gets revamp and someone always tries to take away the clocks. The public outcry always has them reinstalled.

AN ICONIC MEETING PLACE IN CENTRAL MELBOURNE
"meet you under the clocks" is a well worn phrase for those wanting to meet up.
It's actually the steps up to Flinders Street station on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Sts.
These days is very busy - making it a little more challenging to find the person you are meeting up with.
Additionally there isn't anywhere to sit and wait (other than sitting on the steps themselves which is not advised) so you may be better to meet at a coffee shop :)
