10/10 experience, especially for a history buff.

Some logistical data:
there is parking at the top of the hill, it is however limited so make sure to arrive early in the day or later in the evening. Parking is also not that expensive. Depending on the vehicle you drive, it ranges between 2€ and 10€. But you could also park at the bottom and walk up. This will take a while, maybe like 30-45 minutes. Wither on the street or through the path in the woods.

Once parked, you can either walk up the rest of the hill (20-30 minutes), or you can take the bus or the taxi to the top. The bus runs on a schedule, and the taxi costs 3€ per person one-way.

At the castle: you can explore the grounds of the castle for free, but get access to the inside of the castle you need to pay. It ranges from 9€ to 13€ and has a tour included.
You can choose to do the guided your that takes about 2 hours or do a self guided tour. For the self guided tour, you get a little device that places different bits of information depending on the room you are in.

The grounds and the castle are breathtaking and definitely worth the trip. Plan a day or at least several hours for the visit, there's lots to see and the grounds are rather large. I can definitely see why Martin Luther decided to hide out here while he translated the bible.

Great experience. One of the walking routes was closed, so I got some extra KMs in that day, but the hike from the HBF was well worth the views! Walking through the woods to get there was a splendid bonus!

Beautiful Castle in the middle of Thürigen forest. It is very big and the guided tour is also bigger compared to other castles I have visited. The tour is only in German though. I would recommend it. It is very easily accessible and has summer shuttles and buses directly to the Castle so requires minimal walking. For old people there is mini taxi service from bus stop to Castle door.

Great Castle. The family tour (in German) is really good for kids but also contains interesting things for Adults. The tour guide did a great job keeping the kids entertained with stories and facts about the castle and the people that once lived there. All our kids (5, 8, 10) loved it.
One should definitely book one of the tours as they really make everything come alive.
It was a great experience being able to visit the place where Luther translated the Bible to German.
The walk up to the castle from the street "Am Siechenberg" is an awesome hike of about 45min with great views of the castle and some great rocks to climb on. Definitely go by the Metilstein on the way. The hike is very much recommended over driving up to the parking lot.

Wonderful place to go with family, friends, partner or on your own. Enjoy the history and stories as much as the views.

A nice castle with rich history streching from its construction in 1067 to 1999, when it was officially made a UNESCO world heritage site. Tour was highly interesting, and the castle is middle-sized but there is much to see. This is the castle where Martin Luther translated the new testament from Greek to German in 1521. Astounding view from the south tower over the valley at a height of 500 meters(1600 feet). Inner decoration is nice as well, detailed mosiacs and late Romanesque architecture are quite impactful. This is the ideal castle.

It was one of the best castles I have visited. I recommend going early to avoid the crowds. You can buy tickets online to avoid them selling out during peak tourist season, but you can also buy them on site. The ticket office is past the drawbridge but before the second gate area. Remember to buy a photo pass with your ticket if you want to take photos during the tour.

Do take the tour and do take the digital guide. It is a great way to experience this lovely castle on a rock.
If you walk to it from the city centre, you will have a nice stroll up the mountain on top of which the building was constructed.

We love this place as a day hike as a family any time of the year!
A 10km walk from station to station with a walk into the castle and a detour around the Metilstein hill

Awesome. They have an English tour guide but check the time. She is softly spoken but is quite knowledgeabl. I went today 8th of January and it was quite cold minus 5 with a little biit of snow. But the interior is nice and warm. The cafe also has an english waitress.

Might be quite packed in peak periods.

A beautiful castle reconstructed in the 19th century with many preserved Romanesque elements, connected to St. Elizabeth of Thuringia and Martin Luther. It definitely deserves to be listed in UNESCO. Guided tour only. Parking lot under the castle, approx. 10 minute of walk uphill, possibility to use paid shuttle service. Quite a lot of people even on a working day

Incredibly important historical site for religion. We took the tour (only in German) which was excellent of you speak German. The only thing is that the room where Martin Luther translated the Bible is after the tour ends, and then some. So we kept thinking we had missed it. Lol

I recommend the guided tour of the castle. It is well worth it. The guide we had was excellent. There are good views to be had from the Panoramaweg.

By far one of the best castles and collectioms i've visited in Germany!
I advise to buy a ticket for the indoors exhibition and come one or two hours earlier to enjoy the outdoor area.
