An amazing place! I had about hour and a half to go through the museum before closing time and it was for sure not enough to properly see and read about everything that you can find here (if you like to read all the explanations that is). You can see that the exhibitions were put up with great care on every subject shown.

Fantastic museum with ancient pieces from every culture. They are also hosting temporary but fantastic exhibitions too. I've visited 'Revisions' which is meaningfull to be exhibited there.

This museum (or rather two museums merged in one) is a must see! Incredible venue and neat curatorship. You come here for some hardcore deep history experience, and even their temporary exhibitions are in line with the concept.

One of the best museums I've ever visited! So inspiring. I especially loved the section on borders and the one on African art.

Went on a museum day, so it was free, but despite that it’s still one of the best museums I’ve been to. The content and its curation is outstanding, great lighting and the use of space is excellent. Large texts are in English but even the small German descriptions will still include an English title. Interactive elements are great and cater for a wide variety of subjects. The Benin bronzes exhibit is done very thoughtfully and is updated for the modern situation, including the recent beginning of the repatriation. Bit focus on Asia/Africa/South America which is unusual to see but very welcome. Such diversity I would encourage anyone to go. They also happened to be hosting a symposium on the Circassian genocide which was very interesting to attend.

Excellent museum - objects from around the world beautifully displayed and there is a lot of context of how they were stolen and culturally appropriated by the colonizers under the guise of cultural exploration.
The museum is thoughtfully laid out with the opportunity to interact with a lot of the exhibits.
Allow yourself a half day at the very least and end with an excellent espresso served at the cafe in the lobby area.

It's purely a gem. Great space for global ethnological representation. Very modern and interactive museum with a lot of information. The arrangement and decision of the museum is truly admirable.

Have been there during the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. Was quite impressed. The museum is big and well maintained. There are elevetors and toilets easily accessible for all people. The collection of the cultural heritage of different countries is impressive. Highly recommended.

This Museum was on of the best I've ever been to, both here and in the U.S. While it may lack the immensity of, say, The Met in N.Y.C., it makes up for it in detailed, *extremely* well presented exhibits on culture. IF YOU DON'T SPEAK GERMAN then no worries!!! A great deal of the information is presented in English and is all very well written and informative!
It's split into two halves, one of which is dedicated to Medieval sculptures and works, the other is worldwide. BOTH are awesome and I would highly, highly recommend the combined ticket.
The only thing that needs work is the gift shop: whereas for example Der Dom has *everything* Dom themed, they had relatively generic offerings, which doesn't detract from the experience of course (hence no star loss) but was something in which I was disappointed

Awesome! Great use of light, placement, and technology. This museum presented a viewpoint not often seen in anthropological museums: recognition of past wrongs. The items on display are fantastic.

Beautiful displays and excellent context. Certainly makes you think about stolen artefacts.

Very modern ethnographic museum, with both great displays and a painfully aware perspective on how colonialism created their collection. Highly recommended.
Joint ticket with the medieval church art museum next door.

As a fan of museums I have to say this one is sooo beautifully curated, it feels like an art museum. Yes the exhibits are interesting too but most surprisingly it is so beautifully and well presented. A must for Cologne!

Super Museum ! They have worked in intergrating colonianism and europeen perspective influence on analysis of different cultures. We spent 3hours and could have spent much more. Very interactive.

Interesting museum to know a bit more about the culture of a sample of the world. All the names of the pieces are in German and in English, as many of their legends.

A world ethnological museum of the highest standard. A well organized narrative around the shared humanity among different cultures in the world.

This was one of the best museums I have ever visited!! We randomly chose to go there today as it was raining and we ended up spending almost the entire day there - it was absolutely fascinating. It has been so well designed and thought out. What an amazing place. Well done to everyone involved - a really impressive achievement.

I was extremely impressed by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum and thoroughly enjoyed my 3+ hour visit. All staff were extremely friendly and welcoming from the very start. The various exhibitions were presented very effectively and I very much enjoyed the ability to view exhibits "up close and personal". I personally found many of the stories being told to be very moving and the various elements of interactivity to be very novel and effective.
Overall I can say this is one of the best museums I have visited in a long time.

A most interesting museum! I loved, that the exhibited pieces weren't categorised by geographic region, but by theme of general circumstances of life, like human depiction, living quarters or clothing.
A modern twist of this museum is, that you are able to download all mp3 files of the audio guide beforehand. So you can listen to the whole audio guide on your phone with your choice of headphones.
While being there a special exhibition showed items from the Benin kingdom, which were about to be returned.

Amazing museum. Definitely recommend visiting at least once. Actually, you can spend many hours there because there are a lot of exhibits and much information to digest. The staff were kind and polite.
