Pierwotnie kaplica była częścią fortyfikacji zbudowanych w XV wieku w celu ochrony ludności. Wieża północna i fragmenty muru zostały rozebrane w 1521 roku podczas odbudowy kościoła. Istniejąca wieża była około 1740 roku ruiną, stojącą w rogu cmentarza. Tu chowano dzieci martwo urodzone i te, które zmarły nieochrzczone. Aby zaradzić temu niegodnemu stanowi, dziekan Rösner (1741-1781) kazał wieżę przeprojektować jako „Kaplica Więzienia lub Lochu Chrystusa”. W kaplicy znajdują się również tablice upamiętniające poległych obu wojen światowych.
