A lovely sauna right by the river with a BBQ place just a few steps from the house. It was a bit challenging to get the house to warm up but overall we had quite a nice stay. There is no electricity so bring clothes for warmth and the two toilets are around 50m from the house.

The place is stunning. I liked it. It can be a little cold during winter, but the place has two fireplaces and plenty of wood to burn. There is also a bbq area few steps from the main house. The sauna was on the weak side. Maybe we did not heat it enough, but I felt that most of the “leil” escaped through the window. Anyways, there is also a pier, which one can use to jump in the cold water to cool down after the sauna. I liked the place and would defenitely come visit it again.

At the second floor were simple mats to sleep and it was very very warm during the night. At first floor was more cooler. Sauna was amazing and the atmosphere was very cozy.

No electricity, no tapwater, no nothing. Just pure nature. Perfect place to get away from everyday routine and comfort. Sauna is few meters from river. Dont forget to bring extra clothes when you stay the night during winter because house get cold quite quicly.

We were planning a trip to the famous VALA sauna hidden in Soomaa when we came upon Metsavahi metsamaja as a potential accommodation. Seeing as we were 8 people, it was really the only alternative we could find within walking distance to the sauna, so we booked it with low expectations. I have to say we were very positively surprised by the condition of this complex: its amenities, location and atmosphere. Yes there is no running water or electricity or much of any phone service, but the accommodation manages to nevertheless meet your every need. For example there is no lighting but they have left loads of candles around to make up for it. There is a huge shed full of firewood, which you can use to heat up the sauna or to make a barbecue (pans and griddles on-site). The sauna is really well built so you can easily go up to 130 degrees celsius with little effort. And although the front door didn't close 100%, the fireplace heated up the sleeping rooms really well. We stayed on september 21st and we ended up having to open a window on the attic floor to make it cooler to sleep :) The contact person was lovely as well.

Sidenote: although the VALA sauna is only an 11 minute walk from the accommodation (according to Google Maps) the problem is that for that to be true, you would need to cros the Raudna river. Problem is there is no actual bridge to do that (apparently one towards Ingatsi, which is in private use, but we didnt check that out), so it ended up being more like a 45 minute walk through the car bridge.
