SHRINE OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL CASTILLO

This shrine in Mudejar style constructed in the 13th century is the oldest of its kind in the village and is located on the rocky foothills of the castle.

It was the first place of worship to be founded in Belmez after the Reconquest by the Christians, who, following their victories, constructed churches inside or near to their fortresses.

Although several works have been carried out on the building over time, its original primitive structure has hardly been affected.

The shrine is dedicated to the worship of the Virgen del Castillo (Virgin of the Castle). An earlier effigy of the Virgin, which was housed in the shrine and was as old as the building itself, was unfortunately destroyed in 1921 after it crumbled and fell to pieces while it was being carried in a procession. Apparently the effigy had been completely eaten away by worms and only a very thin superficial layer remained.

Un rincón encantador.junto a la ermita del castillo está la entrada al castillo de belmez. Donde se celebra en el mes de mayo la exposición y concurso de rincones, rejas y balcones a nivel d Córdoba y provincia llevándose el primer lugar del concurso.

Me encanta!!!. Es una joya del siglo Xll, y la primera Iglesia que existió en Belmez. Mantiene su estructura de este siglo. La imagen preciosa de la Virgen Santa Maria del Castillo, que la preside, es réplica de la primera imagen, desaparecida por los estragos del paso del tiempo, y está declarado como BIN. (Bien de Interés Nacional)
