Templo Los Mármoles. Embalse de Valdecañas, Rio Tajo. Augustobriga.

Relatively unknown but well preserved ruins of a former Roman temple. On weekdays, you are likely to have the place to yourself. The natural backdrop, with the snow-capped Sierra de Gredos mountains in the distance, is also spectacular. Totally worth a stop when exploring the Villuercas-Ibores region of Extremadura. Admission is free.

It was amazing to find this gem near a reservoir! It is so tall and extremely well preserved. There are tables where you can have a picnic and lots of parking. If you walk down a bit beyond the taller structure, you'll find some additional columns below. Loads of trees for shade too.

Wonderful Roman Temple from the old town Augustobriga (lately Talavera la Vieja) that was flooded by the Embalse de Valdecañas. When the dam was built in 1962, the temple was removed and rebuilt next to the bridge where it currently lies. The temple is around 12m high and is quite impressive with the Gredos Mountains behind and the big lake at its feet.

More than recommendable!! You can then have lunch in Los Arcos, on the main place of Bohonal de Ibor, the village next to it. The owner, Victor, is super nice!!! And a visit to the “Balcon de Ibor” next to the river is also great!!! If you are just on the road, then the Gas Station on the road is also a great stop to eat and rest a little!!!

This Roman temple was originally in the ancient town of Augustobriga located on the banks of the Tajo River. Later, in the medieval ages, it became known as Talavera la Vieja. When a reservoir, the Embalse de Valdecañas, was decided to be built in the 1960s, this town was submerged. However, some excavation work was done and archeologists were able to preserve this Roman vestibule and three columns from another unidentified temple.

The site is opened 24/7 and it’s a nice place to relax, take photos and take in the scenery.

Beautiful place to walk around

Billy Joël Ramos and Federico Sanchez Cieza provide more details on the original location of the temple that was moved here from Augustobriga also on the banks of the river. The setting provides an impressive view over the river Tagus that eventually flows in to Lisbon, our final destination - made me wish to get in a boat and begin rowing!

This is a stop that sparks interest and enables one to change down a gear: to stop and stretch the legs and realize that the journey IS the destination. Why not visit the small local town…

Templo romano maravilloso, muy curioso por distinto a otro templos. Es una pena que la ciudad romana esté bajo el embalse solo se movió el templo, por otro lado, no tiene ningún tipo de protección, por lo que su conservación lo mismo corre riesgos lo cual es una pena, y tiene bastantes visitas...

Restos muy bonitos de un templo romano .Es importante recalcar que el Pórtico de la Curia de Talavera La Vieja, conocido como Los Mármoles, es el único que se conserva en todo el mundo romano.

Bello entorno y mejores vistas

Resto de un templo que bien pudieron ser de los griego, pero no pertenecen a la época romana.

Es un lugar emblemático, ya que desde sus columnas puedes contemplar tanto el pantano, casi seco, como unas pequeñas columnas que hay un poco más abajo y que poca gente las da la importancia que debería de tener, pues bien podría ser un mirador de la época.

Puedes llegar en coche y aparcar en el descampado. Ojo al entrar de la carretera,pues hay un desnivel importante y los bajos de los coches pueden sufrir.

Se ruega no aparcar en la entrada al templo, pues hay puerta aunque esté abierta siempre.

Ideal para hacer unas cuantas fotos.

Un lugar que te sorprende por la ubicación en el embalse. Merece la pena una parada para admirar el paisaje. Acceso libre con panel explicativo. Se echa de menos un cambio de sentido para poder acceder al pequeño parking sin dificultad.

Un lugar de interés turístico e histórico con vistas al embalse de Valdecañas. Las columnas impresionantes.

Las dimensiones de la curia coinciden con la descripción que da Vitruvio. Se conserva íntegro su basamento de piedra granítica, así como su pavimento de grandes losas. También su pórtico de 4 columnas de frente y 2 a los costados, correspondientes a las fachadas laterales, que todavía soportan a los dinteles y un arco en el centro. Faltan los muros de la sala. El edificio se divide interiormente en 2 partes: un vestíbulo y la sala de culto propiamente dicha. Las columnas, de tipo corintio, no arrancan del suelo, sino de una gran basa granítica a partir de la cual ascienden. El material con el que se construyó fue el granito local, procedente de las canteras de las inmediaciones.

En el siglo II se debió construir la columnata de Los Mármoles; más tarde, en el siglo III, se edificaron sus murallas. Los restos de este templo se desmontaron piedra a piedra para reconstruirlo en un entrante de tierra, por encima del nivel máximo de las aguas del pantano, a 6,5 kilómetros de distancia de su establecimiento primitivo.
