We did the second night experience at Commarque and what a great surprise. The nigh experience is featuring an amazing display of poetry, class and fun in one of the most stunning castle in the region. The little market & food trucks are a perfect start to the ascension of the castle in darkness. Yes it is steep and a little frightening at times but what a show! The lights are displayed to perfection, the acoustic of the castle help displaying some music and the meeting with strange creatures are just wonderful. A big bravo to the team putting this event in place.

Impressive!!! They did a great job maintaining the castle and not taking away the original remains. It's quite bit so take your time to go through each area. Do not miss climbing to the top tower and the 360 view is incredible!!!

I'd recommend going no later than 4 during November since it gets dark real fast.

High recommend it!

We loved this place and spent three hours total exploring the ruins. The castle has been brought back to life with a lot of love and many details have been added to tell about its past and the people who lived there. The whole place almost comes to life! Especially the caves and information on murals were interesting. Beautiful views around the valley, you can even go up to the tower. Can highly recommend this for history lovers!

This was a lovely, intimate experience with very good value tickets and stunning views over the valley from the very top of the fort. Archery workshop was free and the guides were helpful and informative.

This castle was founded in the 12th century or so and its primary function back then was to protect the abbey. It’s tower back then was wood but later changed to stone keeps. The castle has been under renovations since the early 90s and continues today.
It’s definitely a place to go see if you are in the area. It’s a beautiful sight to see but you do have to do a lot of walking.

Excellent!

Forget the dreadful Chateau Puymatin and spend your time and money here instead.

We spent several hours slowly making our way to the top of the tower.

The man in the ticket booth was helpful and a real down to earth French man.

Signage/information has the right level of detail.

Interesting ruins restored well and the ancient cave art presentation was an added bonus (alas not possible to go into the caves).

The owner deserves congratulations for his time, money and effort. He has obviously considered it historically and holistically... a remote car park to preserve views, the 600m walk through the woods (as people would have done back when it was in use), the first magnificent view as you turn the corner, even the photo opportunity with running water in the foreground and castle on the hill.

Fantastic value and brilliant experience.

Don't miss it unless you hate walking.

Very peaceful and relaxing location. The is loads of games and events for the kids, we tried archery for the first time. The ruins of the chateau are fascinating to explore and the view from the top of the tower is stunning, you just have to be brave enough to climb up.

Amazing place, so great to see such a huge span of human history, and so glad to see it being preserved. Me, my wife, and my 13-year-old son had an awesome day walking through the forest, climbing through the caves and ruins, learning about the castle, and playing the games at the end. Plenty of information in the printed guide for English speakers. Definitely one of our favorite adventures in the Dordogne.

The best site we have seen so far in the region. This site has 3 layers of human civilisation starting 15,000 years go (or more). We spent over 2 hours here, and could have spent more time if we weren't already so tired from sightseeing all day. The site is also special because of constant flowing spring water that was revered by the pagans and then the church years later. Don't miss this site.

There is a nice pathday in the forest to walk before entering the castle. Be ready to climb. I strongly advice a guide. Everytime we visit we discover something new..
