Restaurant Au P'tit Normand

This restaurant was recommended to us by the host of our b&b in Beuvron-en-Auge, a short drive away. It was the last lunch of our trip to the beautiful Pays d’Auge in Calvados, Normandy so we booked to ensure a table (advisable as this is a *special* restaurant) and it was definitely the most memorable!

The restaurant is in Cambremer and makes full use of all the specialist locally-produced foods (pommeau, calvados, cidre and cheese) from this verdant area where calm Normande cattle graze the meadows and apple orchards were in full bloom at the end of April when we visited.

My husband started with homemade country terrine with hints of cumin and had guinea fowl with cider to follow. He was very happy with both.

I went straight in to mains with the magret du canard. Absolutely blow-your-socks-off delicious! I got tastes of calvados from the apples and a wonderful honeyed apple sweetness from the sauce - which turned out to be pommeau, the local sherry-style delight made with - you might have guessed it - apples! The duck was cooked to perfection and, being greedy for those flavours, I was pleased there was plenty of it.

My husband had the pan-fried gingerbread with Isigny butter and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which he loved and I had the apple pie, beautifully cooked but I wouldn’t have said ‘no’ to some Normandy cream to go with.

Husband had a glass of St Emilion and I had a pichet of rosé. The service was good as the restaurant was almost full and there was a relaxed atmosphere with French families and children enjoying lunch, us from Pays de Galles and some American visitors too. Our bill came to just over €90 for a wonderful experience. Mercy beaucoup, Maman.

One tip: if you go, remember to book!

Absolutely 5 stars all the way. This was our most memorable meal while in France. We did the 3 course for 30euros. Great value and so much fun! Everything was unique with great flavor. The chevre entree with basil pesto and salad with spiced olive oil dressing had us making eyes at every bite. My steak with Camembert and roasted potatoes was crazy good. Even desserts did not disappoint. Cooked with a 750 of cider, this was a great meal. Highly recommend.

Have the steak with Camembert sauce! Since I had the 30€ menu with Foie gras I opted for the pintade with a Calvados sauce that included nuts and raisins, super yummy, but I was so jealous of my husband’s faux filet that I would definitely come to this restaurant again just for that! The apple sorbet with Calvados is not to be missed!!

I went here with family for lunch in August. We were over from the US. Did not have a res but showed up at 12 on a weekday. Got a table upstairs. The service was friendly and the food was fantastic. I had a veal chop which was amazing. By the time we left at 2pm the place was full. I can see why. Very friendly owners. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience! We went for the 30 euro menu, and we loved it! The potatoes were crispy and tasty, very delicious! Servings are very generous, staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the products they serve!

My son and I were in Paris and Normandy. Of all the places we ate everywhere, this was BY FAR THE BEST. The food is to die for, SO delicious. The people were so nice and the prices very fair for the fabulous food they serve. If you are in Normandy, do not pass up Cambremer - eat at Au Petit Normand, and you will be VERY glad you did. I can't say enough good - all was perfect.
