Best place to have a break while having a long road trip. Especially if you enjoy the famous Cassoulet.

A great diner in a great location, right on the Canal Midi. The food is superb, with several choices to suit everyone, and the prices are very reasonable too. Ample parking, plenty of outdoor seating areas for picnics, very quiet too considering it's just off the motorway. Highly recommended.

Great restaurant for a highway station stop. Prices are okay and quality is at the rendezvous. You will also have the opportunity to spot some water wildlife while enjoying a good dinner/meal.

We always stop here for lunch if we are on the area. Nice and big cafeteria overlooking the river. Good buffet and variety of choices. Very big seating area, indoors and outdoors.

This is the only place in Europe that I know of where you can take your motor cruiser into a motorway service area, I kid you not !
When the A61 autoroute was built it passed alongside the canal du Midi at this point and some far sighted engineer decided to make an motorway stop with a difference. He built a port as well !
Here you can pull off the motorway and enjoy the usual facilities as well as being able to take a leisurely picnic (the English word picnic is derived from the French pic-nique) along side the canal.
There are passenger boat tours from here to visit the nearby monument erected in memory of the man who designed and built the canal du Midi, Mr Paul Riquet.
His far sighted thinking building the canal allowed barges carrying up to 350 tonnes, a leviathan in the late 1800's as a horse and cart only carried 5 tons. these barges could travel between the Mediterranean port of Sete to Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast avoiding the long hazardous journey through the straits of Gibraltar and it brought great prosperity to the region.
Barges were used for carrying many cargoes' including gunpowder (saltpetre) along this canal, only one tragic accident with it occurred when a barge blew up killing 3 people. They used this canal because that cheeky English Royal Navy rascal Admiral Horatio Nelson kept blowing up the seagoing French cargo ships carrying gunpowder to the French fleet during the 100 years war.
Your safe now, no commercial barges ply this route and its solely for pleasure cruisers. I urge you to go to the Aire du Port on the A61 Autoroute for a visit with a difference.
