Sweet Pea Café

Lovely family-run café in the centre of Chelmsford (opposite Tesco’s) with plenty of seating, including a lovely outside garden.

We have eaten here several times previously and sat both inside/outside and enjoyed the food every time. This time we visited in March on a Saturday and sat outside in the sun. I had a brie and cranberry toastie, my husband had the chilli jacket potato, and my daughter had the chicken/bacon/avocado sandwich. All were fresh, tasty and served with a side of coleslaw and salad leaves. The jacket potato had lots of filling (too often at cafes there is too much potato and not enough sauce but not at this café). I’ve also included photos of the menu in my photos.

As well as the seating you see inside on the ground floor there is also plenty of upstairs seating and other times I’ve been here they’ve been having a group tea party or hen party tea upstairs.

Staff are always friendly and efficient. Every time I’ve been here lots of people seem to be having the afternoon tea (and eating it all – a good sign!). We didn’t have cake this time but I have sampled their Victoria sandwich, carrot cake and brownies previously which are all fresh and tasty. Especially love their brownies. The cakes are all displayed so you can browse and choose whatever looks good.

Lastly they also serve wine and my daughter loves their rose wine, its her favourite.

Tucked away on the outskirts of the town is the beautifully cosy Sweet Pea cafe.
On arrival the cafe was lively with the chatter of happy people enjoying the delights the cafe has to offer.
We reserved a table for afternoon tea and we're seated promptly on arrival. The family run cafe has the benefits of caring and friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home. This was shown in how the ladies were able to cater to my dietary requirements and produced the most beautifully displayed afternoon tea. My friend and I chatted away for hours with the ladies often checking in to make sure we were ok and offering more refreshments.
Even after the most impressive afternoon tea we could not help but leave with some of their delicious baked goods they had on display, all baked in house. I must also add that we had a young baby with us who became unsettled at times and not once did we feel uncomfortable and judged, the owners of the cafe and the guests were so kind and understanding which added to the family friendly vibe of the cafe.
An absolutely jem and a cafe which I hope gets all the support it deserves from our local community!

Beautiful little cafe. I loved the decor and atmosphere. Friendly service, very nice cup of coffee and delicious quick lunch. Recommend to stop by if visiting Chelmsford .

A really lovely find with very friendly staff. Delicious sandwiches and cakes eaten in their lovely garden. You wouldn't think you were in the centre of Chelmsford. Will definitely be returning.

10/10 best plate of scrambled eggs I've had in ages. The smashed Avocado on toast is amazing as well- the chilli flakes are really subtle but amazing!

Lovely, bright and welcoming atmosphere, super friendly welcoming staff, and reasobably priced given the amazing taste! Best breakfast in town by far.

Only one small suggestion; perhaps putting sugar pots on the tables for tea?

The fact even though I was stuffed I wanted to order seconds is a really good sign!

Very cute little tea room in Chelmsford, minutes from the town centre. Delicious food, homemade cakes and reasonably priced. Would return.

Lovely cafe. Really excellent loose leaf tea all the cakes and scones are homemade and reasonably priced. Check out the hidden garden it's such a lovely setting.

Such a cute little café. Perfect for cake and afternoon tea. I was just there for a coffee but also had a vegan scone and was fab.

Nice, clean cafe with garden tables as well. Lovely display of home made cakes to tempt the taste buds. Their menu is very extensive and there are also a large selection of hot and cold drinks. Definitely worth a visit where you'll be attended by their friendly staff. 😊

This is my breakfast/brunch go to place, I've taken different family members and friends and have always had good food, coffee and cakes. Service is patient and friendly. I'd recommend a visit.

I don’t ever write reviews but our lunch today was absolutely amazing!! The staff are lovely, the decor is beautiful and the food is delicious, I even posted a picture and had friends praise the look of it! Will definitely be coming again

A lovely cafe in the town centre. They offer a selection of lunches and delicious cakes at a reasonable price. Quiet atmosphere inside and a garden with seating too. The staff are very attentive and friendly which makes the experience even more pleasant. Would highly recommend.

Amazing food and plenty of it. Lovely ladies, beautiful tea sets and decor was quaint and perfect.
If I had any criticism it would be that cushions on the chairs would have made for a more comfortable experience, and tea refreshed more frequently would have been nice 👍🏻
The cafe was rather warm, maybe have some fans perhaps.
In saying all this, I wouldn’t hesitate to return

Excellent town centre café for brunch, light lunch or afternoon tea and conversation with friends. Recently redecorated with charming garden. Yesterday I enjoyed toasted brie and bacon sandwich with my pot of tea made properly with tea leaves. Staff are lovely. There's a room available upstairs where 12 of us in a voluntary group had a working lunch and everyone was happy.

Quaint place with lovely garden outside. Dog and child friendly. Brunch was delicious.

Chelmsford's hidden little gem with the best homemade cakes, scones etc. Well worth the walk from the High Street. Don't be put off by the busy road outside. If the weather is nice then the rear garden is very pretty and tranquil.
