This wood was a refuge to the people of Skeffington during the plague and was a large forest in Saxon times. During the second world war it was decimated probably to provide timber when imports were difficult to obtain, and the area was replanted by Mr C.Harry Walker (George Walker Ltd.) of Syston between 1945 - 1955.
George Walker Ltd was established in 1814 as a haulage business, and quickly became involved in handling round timbers from the local country estates. Soon the company was trading as a timber merchant, selling and hauling rough tree trunks to sawmills across the region. It was not until Harry Walker took over the business in 1915 that the natural progression into saw milling was made.
The monument commemorates the re-afforestation of the ancient wood. It reads:
