St Michael's Church

St Michael's Church in Discoed is best known for its ancient yew. The yew, and shape of the churchyard suggest a far greater age of the religious site here.
The Welsh name Discoed, meaning "under the wood" appeared in the 16th century. The original Saxon name was Dytchecote, meaning "cottage by the dyke", of course referring to Offa's Duke running through the area.
The first recorded church here is from 1291, when the Mortimer family of Wigmore acquired the manor. In 1869, Henry Curzon completely restored the church. This removed much of the medieval furnishings, but the medieval foundations can still be seen. One of the most interesting feature of the Victorian restoration is the timber chancel arch. The east window is a stunning Victorian work, a dramatic scene of the cruxifixion with lots of deep reds, purples and blue.
There are wall monuments in the chancel to the Taylor family who lived for at least two centuries in Upper Hall, the 16th century manor house behind the church.
