St Mary's Church

Atmospheric historic church that is the only one of the Romney Marsh churches situated in East Sussex, in a rural setting surrounded by fields and grazing sheep.
The church building incorporates a distinctive twin pitched roof design, and large buttresses supporting the outer walls.
Inside, the church is simple and feels light and open, with basic wooden pews, restored wall paintings and a ship's bell recovered from a wreck attended by the local lifeboat.
The entrance from the road isn't immediately obvious, being a tight turn onto a narrow trackway. If the ground isn't too wet, it's possible to open the gate and drive through the field up to the church, but ensure the gate is kept closed to protect the livestock.

Unique and very atmospheric church, just outside of Rye. If arriving by car, the access is down a very narrow lane. If possible reverse in from the busy main road. You may be able to turn around on a nice summer's day, but many cars have got stuck in the mud trying to do a 3-point turn!

St Mary in East Guldeford was built in 1505 by Sir Richard Guldeford at his own expense on his own land. It was consecrated in the same year by the bishop of Chichester, Richard Fitzjames. It is the only Romney Marsh church in East Sussex.
The entrance to this Church is easy to miss just a small track off the main road, the church is across a small field which also serves as the car park.

A very peaceful place but easy to drive past. War memorial at the front to lost sons of the area from both world wars. Classed as a Marsh Church even though it’s in East Sussex.
