Great place to look and walk around. We took the self guide hand sets, and it gave a great insight into the castle and its history. A walk round the path gives good vantage points from all angles and isn't far.

A beautiful castle, it has not been restored so your imagination can run wild as to what most the rooms were used for and how it would have looked.
A lot of stairs but most are wide with banisters. My 87 year old mum found the tower top floor and roof too difficult to get up, but no difficulty elsewhere.
Educational stuff for kids, areas for picnicking and lovely gardens with great views. Entry was inexpensive or free to English heritage users.
A lovely cafe on the grounds and a beautiful 12th century church nearby.

Well worth a visit.

Really interesting to visit. The rooms are all bare, but you can see how this fortified manor was developed. Lovely views if you are brave enough to go up the turret.

This was very lovely, birds nesting everywhere so we could see them being fed. Castle took us an hour, excellent cafe. Creepy church next door is well worth a visit and free to get into as part of the site. Lots of stairs into the buildings so parked the pram in the hall. Staff very knowledgeable and chatty.

What an amazing little castle, easily one of my favorites in all the UK. It has so much character and I love how wild birds are constantly flying in and out of the windows and nesting in the rafters. It just feels magical. The castle and grounds are very well kept, and the gift shop is one of the best around. Be sure to listen to the audio guide!

What a wonderful little treasure! Although quite small, the castle (or fortified manor) is packed full of atmosphere, from the 800 year-old beams and section of staircase, to the swallows that nest in the rafters. An absolute joy to visit. The neighbouring church is also open to visit.Great tearoom just off the carpark.

Stopped off on the way to Ludlow Castle. It is amazing, the best castle we've visited (we've seen a lot). There is an audio tour giving the history and pointing out features of interest. From the basement to the great hall to the gallery and tower, there are a lot of steps and a tight spiral stone staircase to the tower roof. Don't miss the ancient church. (We didn't bother with Ludlow!)

Lovely day out.
The castle is really nice, it's got a lot more character than one that's been restored and overly touristy.
One thing I would suggest as an improvement would be to add internal lighting, I know it's not ideal however there are some quite dark areas particularly the stairs to the tower which makes it difficult to see where you're stepping.
It also made it difficult in some areas to read the information boards as the natural light wasn't fantastic.
Other than that the castle is great, fantastic vies of the surrounding area, the adjacent church is very pretty.

It's not a typical fortress but more like a house but still lovely time spent. There is lots of description all around the castle, but I would suggest taking an audio guide. It's dog partlfriendly, dogs allowed only in the yard.

Really interesting buildings. Very well maintained facilities, shop and tea room. The audioguide had plenty of stories and information. Well worth a visit for all the family, including your dog. There are picnic benches next to the building too.

Little treasure of a place. Called in by chance when passing by; thought it didn't look too big for a quick visit. How wrong can you be? This little English Heritage place of interest packs a real punch. By far my most favourite place we've visited so far. Plenty of seating around to take in tge views and gardens. Tea room off main car park (not visited).

A picturesque site in a peaceful setting. Large carpark that is pay and display but free to English Heritage members. There is a cafe in the carpark you can access free without going in the castle. Toilets and shop are a short walk from the car park then through the gatehouse to explore the castle. There are a few information boards or you can get a guide book or audio guide. Few steps but you can climb to the top of the south tower for views over the site.

Very atmospheric fortified medieval manor house, sensitively restored. Great views and very interesting to see the 13th century wooden stairs still functioning and the Jacobean panelled room

For a weekday, surprisingly busy. One of the best preserved examples of a medieval fortified manor house. Great views from the North Tower. Very friendly staff & guides. Excellent audio tour if a little bossy (you'll understand once you've listened to it). Spend an hour or so looking round before sampling the delights of the cafe (note: very popular with local ramblers).

Stokesay Castle, a fortified medieval manor house dating from 13thC. The 'manor house' was built on the site of an even earlier castle by the wool merchant Laurence of Ludlow one of the richest men in England. The timber gatehouse dates from 17thC when the property was owned by William Craven, the first earl of Craven. There are great views over the Shropshire countryside.
Loved it!

Lovely old castle tucked away in the Shropshire countryside. Legends of two giants and a possible horde of treasure to discover! With a lovely tearoom to finish the visit.
