Old Downton Lodge

This was our second visit. The rooms are lovely, the bed really comfy. The whole place is so peaceful and hope to return again. The food and service are fantastic and they cater so very well for any dietary requirement. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Would thoroughly recommend!

We stayed here for dinner, bed and breakfast. I cannot recommend highly enough! Our food was amazing and the staff catered really really well for my wife who is coeliac. Our room was fantastic and it was very peaceful, it felt like a real treat. We hope to visit again soon!

A very, very good experience. We stayed two nights which we thoroughly enjoyed. First morning we woke up to snow which was quite majestic and picturesque. Our stay was made even more enjoyable by a staff who made us feel nothing was any trouble for them to make our stay memorable. The food was excellent with attentive service. Our room was really comfortable with a four poster bed. On suite the bathroom had a great bath also was a large and a shower of a very comfortable size. The owners were on site and like their lovely staff, anything you asked of them was done with a friendly smile. We would go back and enjoy their great hospitality again.

Just come back from spending two nights here. Can't fault anything. Rooms really comfortable and well appointed. Location is beautiful and ideal for a quiet get away. Staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent especially the tasting menu. The wine flight was incredibly well chosen and matched the food perfectly.

We went for the wife's birthday, and we had the 6 coarse tasting menu. We had the place to ourselves, and we would definitely recommend this for anybody who likes food with good surroundings , building very cosy.

Birthday bash! This was a wonderful treat from my partner for my birthday. Afternoon tea in a super rural setting, away from the busy noises of life, with perfect staff who saw to all our needs. Such a pleasure to be looked after so well and enjoy such tasty fresh food. All washed down with a nice glass of bubbles and proper cup of tea. 10/10 on all areas. Looking forward to going back for dinner one day hopefully. Thank you all!

Tranquil, and secluded location, with a lush garden set in fabulous countryside. We enjoyed an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast. The room was lovely, large, superbly relaxing with a great shower and wonderfully comfortable bed. We loved the food, enjoyed in the opulent dining room. The beef tartare, trout and pork fillet dishes deserve a special mention as especially good! Friendly and helpful staff rounded off a brilliant stay.

We made a short three night visit to Old Downton Lodge to celebrate my birthday. We booked a package that included breakfast and dinner each day and on one of the days had afternoon tea. The first mention, just ahead of the incredible food, must go to the wonderful staff; from owners down through everyone else they were a delight to deal with. They were all knowledgeable about the building, area, wine, drinks, and food. Service was semi-formal but not so formal to feel like you couldn’t have a chat or joke with the staff - a perfect balance. The food was remarkable. On the first evening we had the tasting menu, which is a must if you visit. My partner is vegetarian / light pescatarian, we made them aware of this prior to our visit and each evening she had an adapted menu, including the tasting menu - a lot of places don’t do this and it means she either watches me eating countless courses (a rarity) or I forgo it in solidarity and keep to the usual format of courses. That they adapted the tasting menu as well as the main one was much appreciated. The bar was also brilliant, particularly when like minded people were manning it - mixing a great old fashioned and negroni. The array of spirits is really impressive for a small establishment, as is the wine list. We also took in a couple of the recommended walks, despite a few of the landmarks changing and tracks which were once there being ploughed, these were really enjoyable. Just be prepared for steep hills and take walking shoes or boots. The staff also gave us recommendations for a trip into Ludlow and we visited the nearby Aardvark Books on a tip off (a thoroughly worthwhile visit and delight). I can’t recommend Old Downton Lodge enough and we will be sure to return when the menu rotates through the seasons.

Can't find much to fault. The room was beautiful, staff were brilliant, particularly the man I assume is the manager, and the setting is absolutely lovely.

The food was great across the board. The chicken main and rice pudding dessert being particularly delicious.

Not really even a gripe, but given the menu is quite short it did seem odd that the set menu was the same courses as the a la carte. If staying a couple of nights maybe makes it a little pointless?

We have eaten in a lot of similarly Michelin rated restaurants but I would say that this meal was one of the best (if not THE best) we’ve had. And was far nicer than most of the Michelin starred places, and Masterchef winners’ places we’ve been to. Everything was absolutely perfect - Flavours, textures and how items were cooked. The choice on the menu covered all bases also. It was experimental enough to be ‘next level’ without being too fussy. My partner and I had 3 different courses and all 6 were all just outstanding. Good selection of wines and Gins.

Both service and surroundings also first class. Tomasz the Manager and all the staff made us feel very welcome.

Room was full of character, very comfortable and spotless. Would give 6 stars if I could.

We had the most wonderful, relaxing time at Old Downton Lodge. The staff are sweet and attentive but not overbearing. The accommodation was immaculate and cosy, very comfortable bed and pillows. The food was out of this world - exquisite presentation and flavours. Thank you so much to everyone for making our stay a fabulous experience. We will be back as Arnie said! 🥰

Recently attended a wedding at this stunning location with its beautifully restored buildings. The staff were excellent - especially the barman who seemed to be able to remember what each of the 50 odd individuals were drinking and have the next one ready and waiting :). Food was also excellent with both vegetarian and vegan catered for with what seemed like no extra effort at all (even though it must have quite some effort been behind the scenes). Superb.

We recently stayed at Old Downton Lodge for my Birthday and could not be happier with our stay. The hotel is a wonderfully secluded and characterful property, and our immaculately maintained room was lovely.

The staff were incredibly helpful, polite and conversational - nothing was too much for them. I enquired about the local shoot and the owner very kindly provided a brochure for me to take away.

One point in particular worth a separate mention is the restaurant. The food and wine were absolutely sublime. Every ingredient on our plates was cooked with absolute precision and worked wonderfully.

Top quality restaurant with exquisite food as you'd expect. Everything else was great too, they even gave us free electric car charging.

We spent just the one night in celebration of our twentieth anniversary. Everything about this place is of the highest possible standard, from the beautiful manicured gardens, to the attention to detail and standard of finish in all the construction and fittings of the rooms/stairs/bar area/restaurant, etc, to the efficiency yet friendliness and courtesy of the staff, the beautiful delicacy of the cuisine which, whilst the servings might be a little small were nonetheless of the highest culinary standard - I could go on. Yes, the prices are above average but in the light of my assessment as above, are entirely justified. There are no negatives to record. Thank you for a lovely, relaxing, rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable (albeit brief) experience.

Had the perfect break here; what a gem of a find. Stunning setting and immaculate rooms. Friendly and super professional staff, breakfast was the highlight until we had an evening meal - our best dining experience ever, just exquisite. Thank you so much for making our stay so comfortable and special. Will be singing your praises to all!!

We stayed at the Old Downton Lodge for 1 night in August 2020. It was an absolutely brilliant stay and well worth a visit! The room was very beautiful with an authentic four poster bed, but a modern bathroom and amenities. The grounds were lovely and peaceful, very private and secluded, which makes it feel like a true getaway from the city (we live in London!). The most incredible thing about the stay, though, was the food. Every dish we ordered was superb and exceptionally delicious. Would highly recommend anyone to stay if they ever find themselves in or near Ludlow/Shropshire!!

We went to the Old Downton Lodge restuarant it's a bit off the beaten track but its well worh it.We went for dinner the food was superb and the staff could not do.enough for us.

Old Downton Lodge had everything you would want for a romantic night away. The rooms are stunning, very clean and the service from staff was amazing, so polite, professional, friendly and helpful. We had the six course taster menu and every dish was incredible. So much flavour and we accompanied it with the wine flight, which was a great experience. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would love to come again.
