A wonderful display of quality handmade crafts. Beautiful jewellery, colourful scarfs, leather bags and lots more applied arts for the home. Friendly and helpful staff. Just the place to find for a unique birthday gift or Christmas present for your special friends.

Great place to get unique and beautiful things for your house: lamps, mirrors, crockery, tables, pottery and all sorts of stunning things to hang on the wall.

Lewes is a beautiful town and this is one of the most interesting places in it to visit. Not only is there a dizzying choice of arts and crafts on offer but the ethos behind this organisation is inspiring.

I was taken to this shop by my aunt Tessa (Wolfe Murray) whose unique pottery you can see among my photos.

Within this old building are several rooms packed with arts and crafts, thousands of them -- all nicely presented, well lit and labelled. It's what they used to call an 'emporium', a shop with thousands of things in it. It reminds me of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul where you have a similar array of choice.

Perhaps the best thing about this place is that each item it an original 'one off'. Most shops just sell mass produced things whereas this is a showcase for artists and crafts people to display and sell original items,

My aunt explained how the guild is run. She is one of 30 members who work in the shop one day a month. When she's on duty she'll sell whatever people want to buy, not promoting her own stuff. The other 29 members do the same thing for the other days of the week.

Apparently most galleries and shops of this kind charge about 50% commission on selling original works, but in this unusual locale they only keep 15% of the sale price -- thus giving their members a lot more of the income.

I find this cooperative structure really inspiring and it's how most things should be run. My aunt says it's really well run and attending managing committee meetings is 'a pleasure'. I don't think I've ever heard someone say this.

Fantastic collection of artisan wares from the surrounding area. There are a number of rooms and collections, each displaying different craftsman's wares -- jewelry, fabrics, paintings, pottery, and just about anything else you can imaging. If you are in the mood to shop, this is a great location. After shopping you can go outside and enjoy the gardens.

Fabulous range of contemporary crafts in a really lovely location. Theres a great cafe next door and a beautiful garden. Well worth a visit. I always find something here I like.

Great quality and design craft works by local artits. Ideal for special gifts. Also got a nice wooden chopping board 5 years ago for myself and it still works absolutely fine today. Priced very reasonably for these handmade crafts. Highly recommended.
