One of the most important historic buildings in Pakrac the Baron Trenk Castle, which, unfortunately has been neglected for many years, is in precarious condition and awaiting its final reconstruction and revitalization. The fire with which he was recently caught briefly reminded us of the urgency of the reconstruction of this facility which, because of its historical importance, is a protected monument of culture.
It is a baroque quadruple castle with an open inner courtyard - atrium. It was built by the well-known Baron Franjo Trenk, who has lived brutally for 38 years. He was twice sentenced to death and both times escaped, fourteen times he was wounded in the hereditary war fighting for Queen Maria Theresa, went 102 times to a duel, and there were rumors that he and his cops captured or killed about 10,000 soldiers. Due to his reckless stubbornness, swiftness and violence, but also personal dignity, in late 1747 he was sentenced to life imprisonment in Spielberg at Brno (Moravia), where he died October 4, 1749th.
The military unit under his command was known under the name Trenkovi panduri (Trenks Pandure). It was an army composed first of all by volunteers from the ranks of pompous Slavonian hooligans, and later on by the power of the revolving Slavonian serfs. The pawns of the Panduri were accentuated by courage, but also by the lack of discipline, violence and robbery. They attracted attention to their clothes. They were dressed in a "Turkish way": a red cap, a pair of blue pants, and a red scarf neck. Since then, Croatian soldiers often wear red scarfs, from which a tie was formed and named after Croats who first wore them. Great military successes had Trenk with its 1000-3000 cops in Silesia, Bavaria, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Baron Trend in Slavonia owned several large manor houses in Slavonia: Brestovac, Pakrac, Pleternica and Velika in Požega County.
Although, we do not know the exact year of construction of his castle in Pakrac, comparing it with the castles of the time and almost identical to the castle which was built in Pleternica, it is certain that it was the first half of the 18th century. This spacious one-storey served as a castle and barracks, first for the Trenks Pandure, and later the military crew.
After the barracks in Trenks Castle there was a hospital that worked there until the construction of a new Public Hospice in the southern part of the city. After the hospital, the building will be a school institution for many years, and the well-known Teacher's School will also work here.
Today, unfortunately, the building is abandoned but there are certain plans for restoration and revitalization by the City of Pakrac, which would give new glory to this old and significant historical building through its new function.
