State Library Shimla

The library was established in the year 1986. Before that it was the Municipal Library and it was upgraded to the State Library status.
The beautiful building was constructed in the year 1860 and follows the neo-Tudor style of architecture. It is one of the Ist buildings constructed by the Britishers in the town. Since its construction it has been put to many different uses with minor internal modifications.

It housed the Shimla Volunteer Corps and the Health Department and the Station. After that it was given to the Municipal Library, which was later redesignated as State Library. Many modifications were made to the interiors when the building was converted to a library.

The building is two storey. On the ground floor are the Stack Hall, Technical Section and Circulation Desk. On the Ist floor are the Librarian's Room, Office, Reference Section, Children Section, Magazine Section and Reading Room.

The library is located at the most famous spot in the city, called the Ridge. It is considered to be the heart of the city and the place is always alive with tourists from different parts of India and abroad throughout the year. It offers a scenic view of the hills and valleys on all sides. The library with its classic building architecture adds to the beauty of the location. On its right is the famous Christ Church, believed to be the 1st church in the city.
Best Time to visit State Library Shimla
You can visit the State Library when you are on vacation in Shimla. The library is open all year around, from Tuesday to Sunday. The weekly off is on Monday. The timings of the Library are from 10 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening. If you are a loner or wanderers who want a good experience you can visit the library. There is no entry fee for the visitors.

I did not see much new hard case books but the old oakwood smelling books that l love whenever i visited while studying in college there

In the days of smart phones and AI ,there is no dearth of book lovers and book clubs Shimla and thank Heavens for that

On the ride above the mall. It’s a flat area where people and tourist come together and it’s a place where all ceremonies and rallies of Shimla take place. There is a road to lakda Bazzar and on other side is scandal point. With beautiful snow capped mountains available and just behind library is road to Jakhu Temple.

Heritage library at ridge very next to the christ church

The State Library Shimla is one of the two locations of the Himachal Pradesh State Library in Shimla. The library is housed in a neo-Gothic building located right next to the Christ Church. This two-story structure has been designated heritage status as it dates back to the English Era. It was then known as the Tudor Library and is referred as such even today by the older generation of the city. Open to all, the state library houses a collection of 7000 rare books.

The Shimla state Library is located at Mall road in Shimla. IT'S a great place to Visit with family. Shimla once upon a time was the Capital of British empire. And you can sense this time at Mall road in Shimla.

Shimla, which is a famous tourist destination, was the summer capital of India for more than 100 years during the British era. The city has been left a very rich legacy from the British rulers, in form of the culture, traditions, sports and the architecture.  Among the other things, Shimla has inherited many British –era buildings, which were used for official and the residential purposes.

इंद्रलोक मानवीय कल्पना है। पर शिमला यथार्थ है। आँखें बंद करके कल्पना कीजिये। इंद्रलोक, यानी स्वर्ग ऐसा ही दिखेगा। इंद्रलोक में ग्यारह अप्सराएं प्रमुख बताई गई हैं। कृतस्थली, पुंजिकस्थला, मेनका, रम्भा, प्रम्लोचा, अनुम्लोचा, घृताची, वर्चा, उर्वशी, पूर्वचित्ति और तिलोत्तमा। यहाँ, शिमला में तो अगणित हैं।
इंद्रलोक में रिज नहीं था, मॉल नहीं था, समरहिल और जाखूहिल भी नहीं था। शिमला में चारों हैं। यहां हनुमानजी रहते हैं, "कलियुगी" परशुराम भी यहीं हैं, जिनसे एक समय इंद्रदेव भी भयभीत रहे। मैं तो कहूँ कि स्वर्ग यहीं है; इंद्रलोक भी यहीं है।
