It is 35 km rock cut temple in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. Temple presents
Nagara style of architecture made in 7th - 8th AD. It is believed that the temple was built by pandavas during their stays in Himalyas. Rock cut Temple is also called as "Ellora of Himalyas" depicting Pahadi or North indian Nagar art. However temple got destructed at the time of earthquake in 1905 in kangra (being reason temple's dome looks likely different above 10 to 15 ft, looks like.resored) and in 2002 GOI take initiative to refurbish and open for public, further temple is under Archeological Survey of India and declared as endangerd due to its specific art and national importance.

Masroor Rock Cut Temple is located at Lahalpur in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The route is easy to find out if you're going via a car and that is advisable as it is a detour from Lunj from the main road.

Masroor Rock cut temples were built in the 8th century and are made from Sandstone rock. They are a version of North Indian Nagara architecture style, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Saura traditions of Hinduism, with its surviving iconography likely inspired by a monotheistic framework. They are a sight to behold and work of pure admiration. You can also visit the temple inside. Though it has some damage from the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake but what has remained is still so exceptional !

The tickets can be easily scanned when you reach the entrance and I absolutely loved that ease of getting them online. I have also shared the QR photo in my photos below.

It is not a wheelchair accessible sight as a lot of stairs are built to reach the sight. Photography is allowed and you can also feed the fish in the pond as it's considered good luck but make sure to buy the necessary food items at Lunj as that would be your last stop as you might not find shops ahead.

It is a beautiful sight of history that you should definitely not miss if you're visiting Kangra. Masroor should definitely be on your Himachal spot wishlist.

Highly recommended when in Himachal Pradesh :)

Quite clean, nice, beautiful, & calm place to visit. You have to buy a ticket online to visit the temple & then you can go inside. It's a simple temple but, the artistry of cutting a single rock is an awesome experience.

Great place to visit! A temple made in a single rock many centuries ago, ravaged by an earthquake and still standing tall for one to explore. Little far from Dharamshala but must visit for history and archaeology lovers.

The Rock Cut Temples of Masroor, located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India, are an impressive architectural marvel dating back to the 8th century. Carved out of a single rock, these temples exhibit intricate detailing and craftsmanship, reminiscent of classical Indian architecture.

Visitors are often awe-struck by the grandeur of the temple complex, which consists of a group of rock-cut temples dedicated to various Hindu deities, primarily Lord Shiva. The main temple, dedicated to Shiva, features a towering shikhara (spire) and intricately carved bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.

While the temples have suffered some damage over the centuries due to natural erosion and earthquakes, they continue to stand as a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who created them.

The site offers opportunities for exploration and photography, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and travelers exploring the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh. However, accessibility and infrastructure around the site may be limited, so visitors should plan accordingly.

This temple is a marvelous heritage of India. This is a rare monolithic temple of Northern India. The temple is built by carving a single type of stone and it's beautiful.
Entry fee is just Rs 20 and tickets can be purchased only via the online method for which there is a personal to help. I enjoyed my visit here and would recommend this place.
Everything is great apart from the lake. The lake needs to be cleaned as it's very dirty and you can see plastic and dead fish floating.

Recently explored Masroor Rock Cut Temple (11-11-23) – a hidden gem for a family picnic. Even during the Diwali Festive Season, the serene atmosphere prevailed with fewer crowds. The temple, a marvel of ancient architecture, left me in awe. The journey from Kangra unfolded breathtaking mountain views, riverside scenery, and enchanting pine forests. The road, though occasionally bumpy due to recent heavy rains, was generally well-maintained.

Entrance fees were surprisingly low, and the online ticketing process, facilitated by the attentive guard, ensured a smooth experience. The strategically located restroom atop a hillock provided not only convenience but also a panoramic view of the surroundings. Cleanliness was a pleasant surprise.

A quaint eatery near the temple offered delightful treats – from scrumptious Vegetable Maggie and momos to an outstanding pizza. The pizza, in particular, was a standout. I cherished nearly two hours in this picturesque setting, perfect for both photography enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxed picnic spot. Masroor Rock Cut Temple is not just a place; it's a reason to take pride in our rich heritage.

Beautiful place. Not known too much as it is quite a distance from the main city. But the journey was worth it. The rock cut temples show our rich heritage and depicts the kind of art we had in our country. It is partially destroyed due to an earthquake in 1905 but the remaining part is well maintained. However food facilitates not close by so don't plan this visit so as to overlap with lunch times.

Very beautiful rock cut temples that were partially destroyed by the 1905 earth quake. All the temples were defaced and some faces missing maybe done during the mughal rule. Not sure though. Take 1.5 hour to reach here from Dharamshala by car. The place is overall clean and has a nice tea stall outside. Worth the visit if you're interested in history

Must visit if you are in Kangra.
Awesome architecture of 8th century. Temples cut out of single rock.
Rs. 20 entry ticket per head to be bought online. Ancient Hindu temples. It's ASI protected monument.
Very well maintained in such a remote place.
Approach road to the temple is narrow and not good. Drive slowly and carefully. Could see landslide on the way.
Parking and a shop at the gate for snacks, tea etc. Washroom near entrance.

A hidden beauty far away from all the limelight. Takes about 2hrs to reach from Dharmashala by car. No bus routes available nearby. A digital entry fee directly payable through app( no cash taken). This temple is in complete ruins post a massive earthquake in 1800’s. No much history is known, no guides available. But the massive ruins speaks for itself the magnificent temple that existed earlier. A pond is beautifully constructed in front, which still has certain ruins beneath it. Apart from the ruins, the view of the temple from the top is heart breaking! However, the sunset view is spectacular at the top!
