My maternal uncle lives there. I often visit them. It is their village. I have seen the site where the digging was carried out. I was in my childhood when the places in the village were dug. I can still remember that.

Rakhigarhi, (Hindi: राखीगढ़ी) or Rakhi Garhi (Rakhi Shahpur + Rakhi Khas), is a village in Hisar District in the state of Haryana in India, situated 150 kilometers to the northwest of Delhi. It is the site of a pre-Indus Valley Civilisation settlement going back to about 6500 BCE.[2] Later, it was also part of the mature Indus Valley Civilisation, dating to 2600-1900 BCE.[3] The site is located in the Ghaggar-Hakra river plain,[4] some 27 km from the seasonal Ghaggar river.

Rakhigarhi encompasses a set of seven mounds, and there are many more settlement mounds in the immediate vicinity.[5] Not all of them were occupied at the same time. Depending on which mounds to include, the estimates of the size of Rakhigarhi have been given variously as between 80 and 550 hectares.[6][7][8] In January 2014, the discovery of additional mounds resulted it in becoming the largest Indus Valley Civilization site, overtaking Mohenjodaro (300 Hectares) by almost 50 hectares, resulting in almost 350 hectares.[9]

The size and uniqueness of Rakhigarhi has drawn much attention of archaeologists all over the world. It is nearer to Delhi than other major sites, indicating the spread of the Indus Valley Civilization east across North India. Much of the area is yet to be excavated[10] and published. Another related site in the area is Mitathal, which is still awaiting excavation.

When we talk about travelling to North India, we begin with Kashmir, then slide towards Himachal, pay a visit to Punjab and then rush towards Delhi. What about Haryana? Nobody (including me) even considers stopping at Haryana, even though it is right in the centre of Punjab and Delhi. People usually say “It’s too backward”, “There is no history”, “It doesn’t even have any famous monument dude”. What if I told you that Haryana has one of the oldest and the largest cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization? Is that historical enough for you?

According to latest discoveries, Rakhigarhi, a village in Haryana, is the site for the biggest Indus Valley Civilization city, one which exceeds even the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro sites. This discovery promises to tell us more about the daily lives of people who lived here more than 5,000 years ago and it might also turn Haryana into a global tourist destination

This is the largest settlement of Indus Valley Civilization and it is at least twice as large as Mohenjodaro, which was previously thought to be the largest Indus Valley Civilization site.
By Carbon dating, historians have confirmed that the remains of the city is at least 5000 years old.
