Top Christian pilgrim centre in Pathanamthitta district. From AD 325. clean surroundings and road side visibility is plus point. Daily evening prayer is there. But due to old small building it is difficult to accommodate all devotees at the same time. But still we should preserve this historical place

Kadampanad church is one of the oldest churches of St. Thomas Christians in Kerala. Mar Thoma Sliha (St. Thomas), an Apostle of Jesus Christ, came to India in AD 52 and established a Christian community in Kerala. There is evidence that he established eight churches (known as Ezharapallikal). One among them was at Chayal (Nilackel), situated in the western ghats. In the beginning of the fourth century, a group of Syrian Christians from Chayal migrated to Kadampanad. They consecrated a church at Kadampanad in accordance with Syrian tradition and rituals in AD 325, in the name of Mar Thoma Sliha as their patron saint. As time went by, a strong Syrian Christian community flourished in the vicinity of this church.

According to the deep-rooted traditional belief of Syrian Christians, St.Thomas, the beloved Appostle of our Lord, came to Malankara in AD 52 to proclaim the word of God and His Kingdom to the people of this land. Tradition says that St.Thomas consecrated seven and a half churches in different places of the south-western stretch of India, the present land of Kerala. The presence of small Christian settlements scattered along the western stretch in the first century can be historically traced through various evidences and traditional belief.
ne among the seven and a half churches was at Chayal, situated on the western ghats. In the fourth century, a group of people from Chayal had migrated to Kadampanad probably due to social and agricaltural demands. Those followed the Syrian tradition and rituals consecrated a church at Kadampanad in AD 325, St. Thomas as its patron saint. Through several centuries a strong Christian community had flourished in the vicinity of this church. H.H.Marthoma III, known as Kadampanad vallyappuppan, a historical and spiritual leader and Metropolitan of the Syrian church in the 17th centuary deceased on 21st April 1688 while he was in this church and on 22nd April 1688 he was buried at the sanctum sanctorum of the then St. Thomas Valiyapally, the present St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral. Every year thees days are observed and people irrespective of cast and creed reach the church with prayers, offerings and pay tribute to Vallyappuppan to have his blessings.

Three hundred years after the demise of H.H.Marthoma III, on 22nd April 1988, H.H. Moran Mar Baselious Marthoma Mathews I through his Kalpana No.93/88 declared the present parish church as St. Thomas Orthodox cathedral.
