The artist-owner of Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca has done a stunning restoration of this grand 17th century residence that fell into disrepair for 40 years before he acquired it. I was expecting to find a beautiful B&B based on the photos I saw on the site, but the place exceeded my every expectation — and that of my husband, a noted architect who has specialized in historic renovations for over 30 years. Not only are the rooms and the views like a fantasy (real splendor, not tacky imitation), but the furniture and appointments were carefully chosen and splendid. The palazzo is in the quiet heart of Bettona, a medieval hill town built on ancient Etruscan foundations. As though that weren't enough, the host is a superb cook and generous host. What more could we ask for?
