Loved it. It does need new money for new presentation, but the Neolithic pottery they have, is the prettiest of them all.
People working there were awesome. Maybe add more dates to every piece. You have it in the beginning, but it's hard to remember what was when.
The Neolithic pottery they have is so gorgeous. Ah and also some pretty Greek ones.

The museum is definitely worth a visit. It shows finds from local excavations.
For me, the reconstruction of a prehistoric hut, oven and hearth is especially valuable. I haven't seen them in a museum in Italy yet. And of course, stories related to the ancient whale, whose remains were discovered in these areas are also a "must have".

O loved this museum, it will stay in my mind for a long time. I have learned a lot and it felt like the things I new were brought to life. The museum is an experience, every detail is very well thought trough (good display of informations, great selection and placement of exhibits, multi-sensorial, much needed alternation between classic museum showcases and installations/ other different ideas. Thank you for your devotion to research and making archeology understandable! ❤

Well at the beginning i thought it was only a regular archaeological museum. But I have to admit that the things there were well maintained, clean, with clear explanation on each pieces. But then apparently I was lucky, because there was another installation at that time that talked about history of human race from Darwin's theory, to different ages of human race with full multimedia, visual and audio effect. It was amazing.

What a great stop on an afternoon when we didn't have much else planned! Dedicated, enthusiastic staff -- explained so much, I wondered if they were about to give us a tour! Extensive info about prehistoric and early human settlements in the area. Lots of info about the Greek settlements. Lots of info about the whale skeleton, but not very much of the skeleton itself is on display at this time.

Lots of local archeological artifacts and taranto exquisite crafts, the content on the introduction board is very detailed. Also there is a collection of photos that records how the relics around Matera was found. Not to be missed!

This is one of the largest museums in Basilicata and is certainly a must if you are in Matera. The museum has a large section on the prehistory of the area, with an excellent reconstruction of a hut and additional activities for children, while the upper floor offers a rich tour of the Archaic period up to the early Hellenistic period. The museum houses a number of stunning finds, most notably the assemblage from the elite tomb of Timmari, and always has temporary exhibitions on specific themes.

I have visited museums in many countries around the world but found the National Archaeological Museum in Matera as good if not better than many of its contemporaries. The antiquities themselves showed quite clearly the evolutionary progress of mankind and they were very well displayed, never too many in a cabinet, well lighted and clearly catalogued. But it was the written panels around the walls, in both Italian and English together with maps and diagrams, that contributed so much to the overall learning experience. Where appropriate there were excellently presented replications of archaeological sites, but not too many as to overload the senses or distract from the overall learning experience.
Next year, Matera will become a City of Culture. The staff of the Archaeological Museum must surely have played an important part in gaining that accolade. and they certainly deserve international recognition for their part in presenting a most enjoyable learning experience. I hope the Museum gains the reputation it so justly deserves.

A wonderful small museum with English displays on all the time periods of settlement in Basilicata. The Greek vessel displays are as good as any museum in the world. Great depiction of early living arrangements. All for 2.50 euros.

Nice collection of archaeological finds from the area of Matera, especially the painted ceramics from the Magna Graecia period. A couple of good exhibits for children.
