Nell’alto medioevo sorgeva qui la potente abbazia di Santo Stefano fondata sulle rovine del tempio di Serapide. La chiesa di San Gianuario, già badia di S. Stefano, fu riedificata nel 1071 dal normanno Rinaldo di Malaconvenienza. Nel 1599, scomparso il monastero, la chiesa viene completamente ricostruita, con il recupero delle strutture dell’impianto medievale.
