Ancient New Gate, Salerno

The Porta Nuova, or "New Gate," holds a unique position among the city's historical entrances. As the last gate constructed to provide access to the city center, it remains remarkably well-preserved compared to its older counterparts. This gate, completed in the year 1754, boasts distinctive architectural features that set it apart from the others.

Delle sei porte salernitane di un tempo (Catena, Elina, Nocerina – di Ronca, Rotese, di mare), Porta Nova è l’unico portale monumentale che ha mantenuto intatto il suo carattere di monumentalità rispetto alle altre che, o furono inglobate nella crescita edilizia urbana che ne ha mortificato l’originaria monumentalità o hanno subito la triste sorte della demolizione.
L’attuale Porta Nova, varco monumentale a sud-est del centro storico di Salerno, permette di accedere alla piazza Flavia Gioia (la Rotonda) ed è il frutto di una ricostruzione e di un riposizionamento avvenuti alla metà del ‘700.
La sovrasta una statua di San Matteo sotto la quale viene epigrafato: “POSUERUNT ME CUSTODEM”. La statua fu poi rinnovata nel 1754 come riportato “ANNO MDCCLIV".
