Porta San Matteo è una delle quattro porte principali della cinta muraria medievale della città. Fu costruita tra 1296 e 1297, quando il Comune decise di comprendere i nuovi borghi cittadini entro una nuova e più estesa cinta muraria.
E’ stata oggetto di più restauri, tra cui nel 1994 e l’ultimo nel 2021 (qui venne fatto anche un trattamento impregnante e la tinteggiatura che ha ridato alla porta il suo colore naturale)
