Daisetsuzan Sounkyo Kurodake

We didn’t ski here but it looks like a fun, if very small, slope. (Only one lift.) We will definitely come back for a run here if we can. Probably good for early season skiing. There was a great view from the roof of the terminal and the food in the restaurant was top notch. I’d like to see it in summer.

Beautiful national park. This time of year the leaves are just starting to turn so nearly everything is still green.
The best area currently to see fall colors is the lookout point at station 7. It's a 30min roundtrip hole but it can be very muddy with the rain this time of year.
There is some fall colors near the top of kurodake as well.
I highly recommend coming here for the beautiful scenery and onsens in the area.

Beautiful all year round -but winter time can be a bit too cold. Visited in late spring and surprisingly there are still snow at the peak. Pretty view from the top, worth all of the trip going here. There is only one restaurant here, so prepare your food before you’re visiting.

Lift to the mountain is out of service during January and early February. Only cable car is available. View is great during winter.

The weather was quite cooling in July. Staff was very polite and helpful at the cable car, chair lift, and hiking stations. Toilets only available at the cable car stations. Upwards to the peak, there's no more toilets.

I can't speak to the skiing, since I visited the area in early July. The view from the top of the chairlift, spanning over the valley, was stunning, with low clouds filling the valley below. We didn't manage to hike to the top of Kurodake because of the significant amount of snow on the ground at higher elevation. However, we enjoyed our hike and the flowers in the small botanical garden between the ropeway and the chairlift stations.

The Daisetsuzan National Park is a first place in Japan to see autumn leaves, started around the end of September. I took ropeway and pairlift round trip tickets is 3,000¥ to upthere.

Sounkyo onsen is very nice place to stay and sightseeing.

Climb up the stairs to have a wonderful view of the mountains

Beautiful mountain with great, green mountains during the summer and the whole mountain blanketed in snow during the winter. You can get to the peak of the tallest mountain with the tram. You can also see the gargantuan, exquisite dam in the valley, although most of the time the dam is almost empty and is filled with some water. Prices can get quite expensive during the holidays. You can arrive in various destinations after descending the mountain range.

We visited this place in October. We took the cable car to the top and enjoyed walking around the path as the forest had beautiful colors in fall.

Good upper mountain backcountry, but a bit busy. The ropeway run is good if it's fresh.
