Sure, it's the kind of place we only go for special occasions, but we know we're in for a great experience when we do. We had a corner room with a private bath overlooking the river, so we could listen to it flow by and view the autumn colors while soaking. Glad that breakfast was early so we had time to enjoy it the night before and before check-out.
Dinner was a kaiseki meal was served in a semi-private room. The courses were timed well, so we never felt like we had to rush through any before the next one arrived. If I had any complaints, it would be that it was hard to get full without something heavy, like noodles or more rice, to compliment the variety of meats, veggies, and fish.

We've stayed here two times in 2019... Both excellent experiences. Spend the extra money for the largest room with the onsen inside the room. The food alone is worth about $200 per person for dinner if you were to eat in Kyoto or Tokyo. This is fantastic, the location perfect, the service perfect. Better than the Ritz Carlton. Trust me on this.

A lovely ryokan with amazing service- getting out of the taxi which took us there, our bags were immediately whisked away by a hotel staff and we were served tea and ginger while they got the papers ready. We got a tour and a huge dinner with several parts, guided along by a friendly attendant who didn't know much English (the one we had for breakfast knew much however). It was all very delicious. The room was lovely also and the beds were put out while we were eating dinner. It's a comfy size with nice desks and a beautiful open air hot bath overlooking the river, mountains and a bit of the road below :b We didn't test the public onsen but what I saw, it was pretty also. The hotel staff brought us back to the train station via shuttle bus, kindly. Expensive ($900 a night for us) but a lovely experience at this hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for 1 night. This was an incredible experience if you are not used to it! The rooms, the food, ... amazing! The food is very traditional Japanese, many different flavours presented in a beautiful way!
First you' re room has chairs with no legs, straight on the tatami floormats, funny sight. After dinner the staff transformed our room into a bedroom by putting the table and chairs aside. They roll out the mattresses on the tatami mats. This can be a bit hard to sleep on, but it belongs to the Japanese culture. The rooms have all comfort you need, television, toilet, shower, double sink, ...
The separate woman an men onsens in the hotel are very nice! A real Japanese thing you should need to do! You just need to get over the thing that you need to be naked to enter the onsen, but once you sit in it, its enjoyment all over.
I could not find something bad about this hotel... They even have a separate souvenir shop!

Location: just 5 mins walk to Nikko Toshogu Shrine and it's surrounding, as well as Shinkyo. And close to bus stop.
Staff: friendly, some can speak English so you won't find any problem. They've free shuttle bus to Tobu Nikko Station.
Room: great! We've a hot tube included room and it offers a good River view.
Food: delicious! I've a shabu shabu and BBQ for dinner. Very nice!

Hotel is well maintained and beautifully simple. Dinner covered many highlights of Japanese cuisine: Tempura, yakiniku, grilled fish, aka miso soup, local veggies and pickles, nabe - all in one dinner. Onsen is not so large, but absolute sufficient. Service was impeccable. In total very good value for money.

Close to the Toshogu Temple and about a 30 minutes walk from Nikko Station. They have a shuttle that can pick you up and drop you off at the station (if leaving at 10 right after check out). There was an outdoor and indoor bath with different temperatures. Very relaxing experience.
