創建は貞和4年(1348)大同妙哲によると伝えられる。

山門をくぐり、左手の奥の山中に妙哲禅師の墓がある。妙哲禅師は黒羽の雲巌寺で仏国国司の弟子となり、塩原の妙雲寺、宇都宮の同慶寺などの名刹を開き、下野に臨済宗の教えを広めた人物である。
伝法寺も開山当初はそういったわけで臨済宗であったが、江戸時代初期に曹洞宗に改宗した。

すれ違えできない山道を車で進んでいくと、
思いの外立派な寺あり。
南北朝時代に後醍醐天皇を開基として大同妙哲禅師によって開山されたとのこと…歴史がある。

創建時は臨済宗だったが、江戸時代初期に曹洞宗に改修。
二度の大火に見舞われながらも釈迦三尊像を死守して現在に残る。
現在の本堂は寛政時代の再建とのこと。
…釈迦三尊像は、色彩が鮮やかすぎたので、
近世で塗り直したのでしょう。
