What a fantastic, interactive and educational place this is for both adults and kids. Here one learns a lot about the limestone cave/quarries of the area as well as seeing artefacts and fossils from dinos and other animals. The 3D paintings are the cherry on the cake. A must see if you're in Zuid Limburg.

Super cool place to visit. Also great to do on a hot day, because the caves are nice and cool. Plus you get to try your hand at carving the sandstone yourself which was very fun.

A very informative, educational but above all impressive experience. Mergelrijk gives an interesting insight into the mining operations in Limburg, allowing you to have an idea of what that must have been like. It also explains why the mining could happen there, why those resources were there to begin with. Which of course leads to dinosaurs, with some excellently set up dioramas and statues. Finally, the multitude of art pieces makes for beautiful intermezzo's. As adults, we spent about two hours in there, but we also saw enough to entertain kids for some time. We'll probably return in a year or two with our daughter!

Awesome experience! Very fun to be walking around a few feet underground and learning a thing or two about how the mineworkers got to work there. There's plenty to learn about dinosaurs (although some information is a bit outdated). The sculptures in the walls made by university students, about ten years ago, and on the displays are absolutely amazing to look at and there's some interactivity as well! You can carve out your own piece of rock and there's a section where you get to draw on the walls (if you dare to enter as it is dark and spooky!). Definitely recommended. It is quite the walk up the hill from Valkenburg, so I recommend leaving on time. Sometimes if you're a little earlier that's okay too.

Third visit over several years, the whole attraction has had an update recently I think. Lots to see, not too crowded. Well worth a visit give yourself a good couple of hours at the least.

Very nice place to visit with kids there is a tour where the kids leave in an educational and playful way a lie of the local history. All the local mining great explained and a lot of information about dinosaurs. The kids can search for remaining of dinosaurs, they will find thoots of ancient sharks in the ground. What also very funny to do is to carve a piece of soft stone into your favourite designs. The kids can bring that to home of they like. Since valkenburg is a very touristic city parking can be challenging even while there is a parking at tbe the opposite side of the road. Don't worry. Valkenburg is a small place so tbe other parking are at walking distance we had a very good afternoon with the kids over here.

Mergelrijk is an educational location for all ages. It tels 3 story's connected through "mergel". First one about the how the "mergel" was created and the animals from that period. The second about the exploitation of mergel and the last one about how coal mining was done. We spend about 2 hours in the "mergel" cave. We parked across the road, but be on time it is a small parking space.

This place is wonderful. Great variety of things for kids of all ages and even adults. There's 3D cave paintings, charcoal portraits, a dino area, a crafting area, where you can craft something from limestone, a dark sinister cave area and through all of it you get to do a puzzle quiz. Very well set-up in the overall intriguing network of the Limburg limestone cave network.

Beautiful and Educational trip trough the history and origination of the hills in Limburg. Turns out this used to be mosasaur territory and the holes formed when the prehistoric seas dried out. Then, way way later, about 300 years ago, the hills were a great supplier of various resources for the towns people, they even grew vegetables!

What an amazing day trip. I would recommend for anyone with children to visit here. They take covid into account properly and the staff is super friendly. It’s a unique experience in one of the few rocky area’s in the Netherlands.

We really enjoyed this activity, specially the carve your own stone we spent there well over 2 hours.
We also sat in the brassire and The service in brassiere was very bad. We were ignored by the personeel for a long time even after going to ask for service. I would recomend to avoid the brassiere.

Some outstanding sculptures to see and you even get to make your own souvenir from a little block of limestone.

There is even a version of Rembrandt's famous Night Watch that took two years to carve.

Parking a bit steep at €5, but it is for the whole day, so go and explore Valkenburg afterwards.
