Captain Donald R. Emerson Memorial

A well cared for memorial to an American pilot who was shot down here the Christmas of 1944 by German anti-aircraft fire. He had defeated 2 of the 5 fighters that engaged him before running out of ammunition and attemped to dive under low cloud cover to escape the remainder when the ground fire caught his plane. He was buried in the American military cemetery in Margraten, but this monument is also kept at the crash site.
I noticed others stopping to pay their respects the Easter Sunday I was there. It is not that far down the path if you turn left when reaching the chapel from the Kollenberg road.
